Well, I'm up to burning 5 litres of oil between changes now, and the dealer stumped of what could be causing it. They think it could be related to the PCV, but there aren't any codes being thrown, so it's unlikely. I'm probably going to replace it myself this week just to see if it does anything. I don't exactly have high hopes at this point though...

I'm going to do a leak-down test this weekend to see if I can get any more info. I'm also going to install a new PCV since it's so cheap.

43.5K miles on my '04 and still going strong. Just changed mine with some synthetic this weekend and it appears that mine is not burning any oil. Dan, if your car dies and it is a Carbon Grey can we trade bumpers. Someone tagged mine this weekend.

I'd find a mechanic with a bore scope and take a peek at the cylinder walls. Unless you're leaking somewhere the only way I can imagine you'd loose that much oil is the rings being shot. Are you getting a lot smoke from the exhaust?

I have an 04 with just over 40K miles on it. Hoping to keep it as long as I can, but I'm putting about 15K miles on it/year currently. No major problems -- keeping my fingers crossed.

Oy! I was lucky with my tsx, at 85k miles I still wan't burning any oil -- though I had been using synthetic for 50k miles.
I've also been lucky with my Audi so far. A lot of people have issues with the 2.0t burning oil but I haven't lost any yet at 2500 miles.
So when is the "what new car should I get?" poll coming online?

still plays with cars
5 liters between changes doesn't tell me the oil burn rate. If it's a liter every 1000 miles, you're still within normal limits and above the new engine rebuild limit according to Acura. Is there any visible smoke at the tailpipe and/or oil fill cap? It sounds like your dealer is not very competent if he can't run some basic tests.

Use all 3 Pedals at once
I have an '04 with 125,000 miles on it, doesn't burn any oil at all
I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic since the first oil change and by no means do I baby the motor

Sorry to hear about your problems Dan. I hope you get your problem figured out. Good luck with that compression test. My car doesn't seem to burn very much oil, I guess that I've been fortunate. I'm almost at 90K miles on the odometer. My TSX is still running great!

I'm betting it's the PCV, so I'm swapping it out this weekend. I'll update this thread in a few thousand clicks once I see if it's still burning oil.

Dan, I have a couple of questions for you:
1) Did you get your car new or used?
2) If you did get your car new, how did you drive it when you first bought it? Specifically, during the first 1000 miles, did you do a lot of stop and go city driving or did you do a lot of highway miles?

Burning Brakes
i think there was a series of bad blocks in the 04 tsx, i cant confirm this as i read it somewhere here. i think i got it from curls thread about his burning a lot of oil too. acura rebuilt it and it stilled burned, then they gave him an 06 block and hasnt burned any yet.
^breaking it in hard in the beginning is better from what i hear....thats what i did and the car runs real well and doesnt burn any oil

Hey Dan (and ck123)...
I'd be highly suspect of the block. If you have a low VIN# (last 5 digits), espscially so. I'm guessing that my problem was something along the lines of warping of the block (cylinders becoming oval-ish?), causing the oil to blow past the rings and into the combustion chanber and out the exhaust.
Do you have lots of soot in the tailpipes and/or on the bumper near the exhaust? If you shift at high RPM / full throttle, do you get a puff of blueish-grey smoke out of the exhaust?
A leakdown test would be my FIRST recommendation (before the PCV). A malfunctioning PCV would not likely cause that much oil loss... because 5L in say 8000km is realy high for a PCV-gone-wrong.
Although as mentioned before, 5L between oil changes is still technically below the 1L/1000km threshold that invokes warranty work, so it's still technically within 'spec'.
A Leakdown test is in order -- keep us updated!

By the way, follow my thread (that ck123 linked to) and use some of that as ammunition with the dealership, maybe to get some goodwill warranty work done if it comes to that.

Very pleased with my 04 MR at almost 97,000 miles....my previous car (Dodge Intrepid) all but fell apart at this mileage. Mostly highway miles now and taking it to redline has been a thing of the past. I will drive it into the ground.

9 more miles until my 04 TSX hits 54,000 miles. Still going, however the heater is odd cause sometimes in the early morning when it was really cold around 20F the heater heated the car at 62-63 degrees. But, then when I drove home it was 44 outside and the the TSX didn't blow hot air out until I set it at 70 degrees, why? Is this normal?

I have an '04 with 86k miles on it and still going strong. I'm not going to say I don't burn any oil...as all engines do to an extent...but my engine oil dipstick has never indicated that I've needed to add oil between changes. So, I say that's good.
Also, my car gets the standard 5w-30 from the dealer.
