M/T 56K Failed

I have a 2004 tsx and my M/T is going out. There is a knocking noise coming from the transmission and the dealer wants over $4000.00 to put a new one in. They told me its the first tsx they have ever seen come in with a failed one. It am still able to drive it and it is still shifting fine the only problem is the noise. A mechanic friend told me something about a throw out bearing and pressure plate and he could fix it for a fraction of the cost than the dealer. Just wondering if anyone else has had this prob with a manual.

i'd try and get the dealership to fix it for you...or get acura customer care involved...also try another dealership...they could try and get it done for you without you coming out the pocket...

Damn, sorry to hear that.

If there not going to cover it under warranty anyway I'd look into other (cheaper) options like your mechanic freind.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't our drivetrain warranty 6 yr/70,000 miles?

If so, I would think that a transmission failure like yours should be covered under that warranty...

Well, a throwout bearing is a lot different than the transmission. It's clutch related. If that's what it is, it won't cost nearly as much as a new tranny. Still sucks, but not as bad as a new transmission. Hope it works out for you.

What is the noise like? And when can you hear it? Usually a bad throw out (release) bearing makes noise only when you are pressing on the clutch, and less the clutch is mis-adjusted, in which case it may always make a noise, but it would get louder when you press on the clutch.

Yeah, I realize a throwout bearing is different, but the OP was saying that the stealership wanted $4k to replace the entire transmission. If that was the case I'd think most (if not all) would be covered under the drivetrain warranty.

Very good point. If the dealer says its the entire tranny, then it should be covered under warranty. Time to give Acura Customer Service a call...

BTW, does anyone have a link to the specific warranty wording?

Actually, his 04 (like mine) only has a 3yr / 36k mile warranty on it. I had a problem with my transmission at around 54k. I had to get Acura Customer Service involved, but they finally covered it. $4k sounds about like the estimate they gave me, too...

Here's the thread on that :
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31846

Before I took it in, I thought I might have a CV joint going out or something along those lines, but nooooo... Thanksfully, Acura Customer Service stepped in and made it right, though.

The basic bumper-to-bumper warranty on TSXs has never changed: 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. That's the warranty '04s came with; it's the warranty '07s come with. Where did people got the idea that '04s came with a warranty of 3 years/36,000 miles???

My mistake. It is 4/50 on the 04's. I knew mine was out from under warranty when I took it in and I had to fight with them about it to get it covered. I have since been looking at other Honda products and it's the HONDA's that have the 3yr / 36k mile warranty, not the Acuras.

Either way, I thought my car should've been good for a lot more than 50k miles before having a MAJOR problem like the differential gear going out and tearing up the transmission. So, I had not bought an extended warranty (at the time). That'll never happen again...

Yeah, but the POWERTRAIN warranty is 6 years/70,000 miles. If its the transmission thats bad, that would be the powertrain. It should be covered.

The warranty coverage for '04 is 4yr/50K. There is no separate "powertrain" coverage. Some emissions parts are covered up to 8/80 by Federal law, but I doubt the trans would be considered an emissions part.

Its been a few days since I signed on here and posted my problem. I currently have 56K on it. Acura said they dont do work on the transmission and all they do is drop it out and put a new one in. The dealership called me on Friday and told me they would cover the labor and a new transmission being put in. I have to cover the cost of the clutch because they suspect abuse to the car which I have never done, but there was a previous owner on my car. So I will only be about $400 something out of pocket for the actual clutch. I would rather use an aftermarket clutch that is much cheaper but felt bad even bringing it up because they are giving me a new tranny and covering costs. Should I try and get a different clutch and just have them put that in at the time they are putting the tranny in other than using the acura ordered one that is $400? I dont know what they will say about putting aftermarket in.

You're the customer, and now that Acura have authorised the tranny replacing, you shouldn't let that influence your decision on how much you want to shell out on a new clutch.
$400 inc. fitting is hardly overpriced - but unless you wanted to drop in a lightened flywheel whilst they've the clutch and tranny out, then I don't see any potential cost saving.
Put it this way - phone a few other Acura dealers nationwide (rather than just local/state-wide) and ask them how much their price is for a clutch and fitment.
If they are much cheaper, raise this with the current involved dealership and see what transpires then.
Worst that can happen is they lose your business, and you get the tranny and clutch (if the other dealer agrees that it actually is shot) done for less $$$ and only a moderate amount of hassle in driving to and from the other dealer.
