Hitting curb costs $5500 !!!

Hi:

I just hit my TSX on a high curb, about 6" high....That's too bad....
At that time, the speed was like 20mph (because I just turned left from the middle of the two way road and it was dark)
Since my car still can be driven, I drove it to Acura dealer around Pittsburgh which is about 60miles away from my home (Moragntown, WV)
Everything sounds ok when I was driving on the highway....

But the dealear quote for $5500.....
I know that I have the passanger side airbag came out, and I also need to replace the front bumper.
But they told me also my two front suspension are also twisted and there is some kind of bar went toward my engine block.....
Anyway, it a lot of money....should I go for dealer of just local garage??
Which means can the local garage repair my car as well as the dealer?
Thank for you guys help.......I am really disappionted about myself.....

For this level of damage, I'd see what the dealership recommends. Usually, dealers don't do bodywork on site anyway and contract that out to a reputable bodyshop.

*makes note to not hit curb at 20mph*

that sucks man, hope you get a lower quote and your car fixed. Don't you just have to pay deductible and insurance covers the rest?

The airbag alone is more than half of the cost.

The bodywork is probably relatively minimal. Sounds like just a bumper cover. Suspension and airbag are the bulk of the cost.

Consult your dealer by all means. You are looking at pretty heavy damage, and without a careful repair, you could end up with a permanently bad wheel geometry, and that is a PITA.

That's actually not a bad question. My brother hit and jumped a curb going upwards of 40+ mph and clipped a chainlink fence without setting off the airbag in the TL.

I think it is possible that he got that much damage from hitting the curb.... From what I understand in relation to my own recent accident and what the body shop manager stated, it was probably the inertia of hitting the curb that threw out the passenger airbag. Apparently our car's SRS system is smart enough to deploy the bags during select conditions..... hence why the steering wheel bag didn't go off since you probably had your seat belt on (by the way, make sure they replace the seatbelt tensioner if needed, apparently mine was on the parts list from my accident)

Good Luck Dude..... I feel ya.....

Btw... I will find out tommorrow if my car is totalled or not.... wish me luck.... I hope that it is considering how new it is and the extent of the damage (final quote around 15,500 https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17027 )

Local shops can also do your job perfectly fine.

Look for a reputable one, because as someone else stated in this forum, "if a bodyshop doesn't have the knowledge to properly fix an accord, they're better off working at starbucks".

It is possible for the side airbag to pop under that condition. My friend had an incident similar to that. The passenger side airbag AND curtain airbag popped in his M5. I looked at his car after that incident, no body damage, scuff marks on the passenger side wheels and the cambers seemed to be off, wheels could be bent as well, then the airbags. I don't know how much the repair would be because he hasn't gotten it fixed yet. He's driving around with the airbags flopping around.

Were you swerving to avoid a burning couch in the road?

(you'd have to be familiar with WVU football to get the pun)

This brings up an interesting question: What triggers the airbags? Accelerometers?

Wow! Yea... definately try to see if insurance will pay for this. That is, if you have full coverage. a $500 or even a $1000 deductable is surely a lot better than paying $5500 out of your pocket. Ouch!
