Heat Shield Rattle????

Ok, so I now have nearly 4k on the odomoter of my 5AT, and have had no problems. Today as I pulled into the parking lot of my neighborhood video store to return a movie, I rolled the window down to simply use the return box on the curb. Well I lightly applied the gas coming from a complete stop and heard a terrible rattle emmiting from underneath my car. It only did it while the car was under acceleration. I am certain that it was comign from underneath because as I got to the end of the curb I could not hear it as loud (the curb was reflecting it back to me). I still heard it as I turned around to exit the lot. And as I pulled out into the road again I could still hear it. I gave it a little bit more pedal and as I brought the engine up about 3k it stopped making the noise. The noise sounded exactly like a catilytic converter heatshield does when they come loose.

I read on another post where one of you had an issue with the same type of sound and discovered it was post ignition knock. Well this was happening at low RPMs and under 1/4 throttle. My car has never had a drop of anythign but 93 octane. So I doubt this is my problem.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and if so what was our fix?

I intend to take it into the dealer tomorrow morning and get things taken care of. I will let you know what the outcome is!

Wow 93 octane! The most I have seen here in Cali is 91. Where can I find 93?

Sorry I haven't had the same problem but let us know what the resolution was just in case.

93 octane

Ortiz, I can get 93 octane at almost any filling station. I would also be willing to bet I pay less for a gallon of 93 than you do for the same amount of 87. Advantages to living in the midwest

I was not able to get the car to duplicate the sound again today. If it does it again I will take it in. I do not want to waste half a day of my life at the dealership just so they can say they could not duplicate it!

Now I am jealous. 91 octane cost about 2.07 a gallon. Two months ago it was about 1.79.

Smart move. especially if you yourself cannot duplicate it. But don't forget to mention it at your next service.

Cypher, was the dealership able to diagnose and fix the problem?

Here in Jersey we can get 93 anywhere, and 94 at most Sunoco's ( I think its Sunoco ). Costs about 1.95 or somewhere around there.

My 04 6mt also had a rattle in the engine bay.... I took it to the dealer and after 4 hours of searching they found I had a bent heat shield. Thank god for my extended warranty!!!
Total service time was 5.5 hours... Sounds much better

5 hours to replace a heat sheild??? thats nuts! but i also hear a rattle that comes on around 2,500 rpms until 3,000rpms. I notice it when the motor gets warmer because you dont hear it on cold starts..it comes after a few miles of driving
