Front End "Clunk"

Hi All -

Checked the current fixes/problems posts and didn't really find anything that is close. Also checked the FAQ section, but just don't know.

During low speed turns (i.e. less than 10mph), going over speed bumps, some stops and some starts (not drag starts, but Granny starts), I get a "clunk" that is audible at times, but can be felt through the steering column/steering wheel. An additional description would be that it sounds and feels like something is loose and moving upon a weight transfer.

What I've done is to tighten anything on the suspension, the sway bar (I have the larger CompTech one), even the upper strut bar. The most I've found is some of the fasteners were not loose, but not as tight as you would think (e.g. 1/8 to 1/4 turn). Even after all this, the clunk remains.

Perhaps I'm really bad at searching, but I did not find any TSB's.

Has anyone experienced the same thing?

The suspension is stock, the sway bar is the CompTech bar, and I have the camber adjustment pressed into the upper A arm. I'm going nuts trying to figure this one out. I have about 53k on the car.

Anyone?? Thanks!

This sounds familiar on how my car sorta progressed with a clunk that turned into a clicking after a while. I drove my car for quite a while until the the noise was very obvious that the passenger CV joint was going bad. I replaced the passenger driveshaft from aftermarket place called driveshaft.com and it solved the problem. I dont know if this is your problem. Local shops usually will take your car for a test drive to see whats up and it will save you some money compared to going to the stealership. Also if it is the the driveshaft aftermarket will save you big money.

I have a clunk, too. I've had it for so long now (2 years), and had it checked at the dealership, but they can't find anything wrong. They tightened things up in the front, but it didn't help. Mine's only during turns though, never while driving.

I had it for a while after having to dodge some crazy bitch in a Hyundai who decided it was a good idea to stop perpendicular to traffic. However, it has since disappeared so I am not sure what it is. They dealership could not find anything wrong with the car either.

If you hear it after putting it in drive and moving about 5 feet, its your front brakes = normal, no need for service.

The CV joint? Hmm, I will definitely check that out - I was/am worrying if it was the steering rack. My bro-in-law runs a shop, but could not hear/find it - but it was a rainy day, and all they heard the rain. But, one of the other mechanics drove it and also noticed it. Thank you!!!

I have an intermittent clunk. sounds like it coming from the right wheel well. I have a stock 06 MT with 16k miles. only happens with low speed, eg driveway or speed bumps. it's not the ABS brake check that happens in the first 30seconds-1 min or so.

I had a very similar problem a few months back. It sounded like a clunk/clicking noise when taking off from a stop and when turning to make a left or right turn. I thought for sure that one of my CV Joints was broken or that something in the suspension had gone wrong. However, it ended being a loose panel underneath the car. It was located just adjacent to where the front left wheel well ends. A simple plastic piece that was moving around when the car was chaning direction that needed to be tightened and the problem was solved. Hope this helps!

I have the same problem and I can feel it from the steering wheel. But... I have 110,000+ miles in my car. So... how do you tell if the CV joint is bad? If the boot is good the joint inside should be good... right?

Yeah, I wish I could be more help on diagnosing this problem. All I did was drive my car until was bad bad enough to know that it was that axle. $168 for passenger axle shipped and $45 for installation solved my problem. If its still hard to find whats going wrong with the car just keep driving it, Im sure the noise should get louder if its the cv joint, at least mine did. I'm not a mechanic, but I think the car wont fall apart.

it's normal. it's how hondas are built. took in the tsx, the honda odyssey both twice for that reason. two different dealers and different mechanics said it was normal. can't remember exactly what the function is for that clunk sound.... i observed that clunk when new and it hasn't affected anything. still runs like new almost 3 yrs later.

one time the ball joint from my old junk Chevette broke and the wheel was flying all over the place. But it didn't have any indication at all when the ball joint came out. (glad I was not in the freeway...)

Will there be anything before the CV joint come out?

Normal?? Really? I had two mechanics take a look at it, and agree that since it's an intermittant noise, there is really now way to determine the cause. Like others, I feel it in the steering wheel. This is the first Honda that ever did this to me. It's not affected handling (had it on autocross track once) and other than being annoying, the car is solid.

Sounds like I should learn to live with this "clunk". After all, the TSX has to live with the "clunk" that drives it.

yep now that i remember now after reading a guy's response above my first one. it's the ABS kicking in. if not that it's something to do with the brakes. i can't remember exactly.. it's been a couple years actually. it's not like it's that loud either.. you can't notice it unless you listen for it. if it's really loud and noticeable then .. maybe there might be a problem. but i'm guessing its the slight click/ping/clunk or whatever noise that i was once bothered by. hope this is somehow reassuring
