FIXED: Buzzing Rattling from Inside the Driver's Side Door

Quite possibly the most annoying sound I have ever heard from any car was this metal to metal buzz/rattle coming from inside the driver side door...

It started off a random rattle, then progressed to a buzzing that would be almost continuous on rougher roads. Any abrupt changes in road surface (expansion joints, road patches, etc), the sound would ring on.

I read several threads on a similar issue, but the notes from the service bulletin were focused on isolating the door panel cover from the metal frame. This did not help. I noted two things:

  • It is possible to reduce the noise by pushing down on the armrest on the door.
  • The noise would be reduced by rolling the window down slight.
After removing the door panel, I tapped the sheet metal a found a spot where I cause the same buzz/rattle, and looked around for the source. Ultimately, it came down to the metal track the window moves along. One end of it bolts to the door, while the other fits into the rest of the track. Over time, this loosened, and was able to make noise.

This was not plastic/metal contact, and did not have any thing to do with the glass.

Here's the track removed:

It is hard to tell from this picture, but there are a few shiny spots on the metal where the two surfaces were rattling together.

The solution, apply some felt tape to the end and reinstall:

That annoying noise is finally gone!
