engine coolant bleed valve

Hi,

Would you guys show me the location of the engine block bleed valve please?

I am trying to change the coolant myself. It looks like I need to bleed the air out with this engine because the radiator seem to be placed lower than the engine.

Thanks!

No bleed valve on the TSX. You need to use either an "air-lift" filling system or leave the radiator cap half on, then let the coolant expand to push the air out. Squeezing the upper hose will help remove some of the air pockets. The engine needs to go through a couple of thermal cycles to fully expel the air from the system.

1. Warm up engine.
2. Turn off.
3. Remove lower plastic tray
4. Remove drain plug from bottom of radiator
5. Drain as well as reservoir
6. Replace plug
7. Open Radiator cap
8. Fill with Honda Type 2 Coolant
9. Loosely put cap on
10. Run through heat cycles
11. Fill missing fluid from radiator
12. Cap.
13. Fill reservoir
14. Check in a few weeks

Newbie question here...Honda Type II coolant? What exactly is it? I know Audi/VW use their special purple/red coolant. And, the green stuff from Kragen/Pepboys/Autozone will NOT cut it. I would assume the green stuff should be good for Honda/Acura? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Side questions, I'm changing the front pads and bleeding the brakes as well. It's DOT3 that Honda/Acura use?

I personally use DOT4 brake fluid, slightly more expensive (maybe $10 per qt) but well worth it IMO, as it is more resistant to boiling, water, etc. It also exceeds all DOT3 requirements

Thanks, 503TSX. What do you use as far as coolant goes? Green or something else?

Hi moda_way

What's running through the heat cycles ?? Does it mean just start the engine so that it settles ??

I have changed once for my cousin's Civic..

I drained it , replaced the plug , filled it from the radiator , caped it , filled the reservoir..

thanks

It's not necessary but Acura claims you should only use their DOT3 brake fluid. It's supposed to contain a corrosion inhibitor additive. One standard size container costs about $5. The label reads "Precision Crafted Fluids". Any generic DOT3 brake fluid will work. DOT 4 should also be compatible.

Hi moda_way,

Thanks for the instructions..

I am able to change the Coolant ( I flushed the radiator ) . I bought 2 gallons of Type 2 coolant..

Removing the plastic shield is the biggest problem..

I took the plastic out ( i am planning to change the transmission fluid tomorrow)..I hope it won't cause any issues .. By the way i broke two clips and need to get new ones..

Thanks

Remember to set your climate control to hot when you warm up the engine. This ensures that the coolant in the heater core is also drained out.

i did that..thanks for reminding...

Also in the Service manual it said once you fill the radiator and the reservoir start the engine and wait for the radiator fan to run twice..

That didn't happen in my case. After filling i didn't tighten the radiator cap as mentioned ( i guess this is to let any air bubbles to come out..) and even after 5 min the radiator fan didn't run..and everything seems normal !!.

i let the engine run for few more minutes and then took it for a drive..i checked beneath the car for leaks and i didn't find any..The Level of coolant in the reservoir is slightly above the max (that's how i filled the reservoir)..

I hope i didn't screw any thing..

It takes more than 5 minutes for the radiator fan to turn on. I reckon I left mine running for over 15.
