Angry Driver's Side Window Shattered

So I was on vacation for a week and left my car at the airport parking lot at IAH. On my return I stumbled upon this....

Shot with DSC-P100 at 2007-08-07

It doesn't appear to be vandalism or a theft attempt. Seems like a stone or pebble went airborne and struck the glass with enough force to crack it. I also have quite a few rock chips and dents on the rear driver's side door. Seems to me it was either construction or the parking lot was getting its grass mowed when this happened and the blades spit out some rocks at the cars.

Do you guys think this will be pretty expensive to replace? How does insurance work in cases like this? Do I have to pay my $500 deductible for a window? Will my rates go up? This Sucks!

I don't think it's going to cost more than $500 to replace, so it's better not to report it to insurance and fix it out of your pocket.

Good thing you have tint. The same thing happened to my truck last winter. I was told by the guy that fixed it that extreme cold can do that...go figure. I was just thankful the tint held all the glass in place, otherwise you would NEVER get it all out of the car. You may still have some in the door, from the bottom edge of the pane, so make sure whoever replaces it vacs it out VERY well. Should cost around $100-150 for the glass, and around $60 for someone to put it in. That's what it ran me for my truck. Look for a small shop to do it for you. If you get VERY lucky you might find the window at a junkyard. That's what I did for the truck. Also, depending on how long you have had your tint, the new MAY not match the old.

Good luck,
Ken

I would check your insurance policy as the $500 maybe apply to collision deductible. This type of damage is usually covered under comprehensive insurance and the deductible is usually lower.

This looks like heat damage - take the car to your insurance adjuster; this kind
of damage should not count against your driving record OR raise the premiums
but check with the ins carrier to make sure.

BTW, if it's heat damage, Acura might replace it as a warrantee item.

Window's been fixed. Insurance coverage was $500, so I didn't go that route. Got it fixed for $120 installed, but now the window doesn't roll up/down as smoothely as before. So annoying!!!

Which lot at IAH? I usually park at the Parking Spot (covered). Maybe the lot you were at has insurance for this kind of stuff

It was the Parking Cents (formerly Economy Lot). When I told them what happened, the guy at the booth told me they were not responsible for theft, damage, or any other such bad luck to the car. Kinda sucks to come home to such a "wonderful" surprise.

Did you check with Acura as I suggested in post 12 ? I still think they would have
replaced it under warrantee if it was heat damage.

Yeah I checked, but it was pretty obvious that it wasn't heat related. The rock chip that caused the breakage was very noticable and you could feel the dent in the glass. I may end up changing the window again to a Honda window insted of the generic replacement I got. I just hate how it cost $400.

Your new glass is warranted. Have them come take a look at it. I had to have teh windshield in my wife's '04 RSX-S replaced. Done by Binswanger - did a good job. No leaks and labor was warranted for 1 yr.

OK, your original post didn't mention a rock chip in the glass.
