Yet more engine trouble!!!!

Ok, so I just got my car back from the shop last Friday. I took it in because of a CEL and horrible gas mileage (about 15 mpg avg!!!). Well, they said it was the injectors and they replaced them under warranty. As you might expect, I have since been watching the fuel economy closely over the past week and am sorry to report that it is still the same (18.7 mpg over a full tank of gas according to the computer as well as some good ol' fashioned arithmetic). That is a range of just 300 miles! Anyway, I wasn't sure what to do about this since I'm sure the dealer would just try and tell me that the car is fine. So I am driving home just a few minutes ago and all of the sudden the car cuts off and I'm just coasting down the road! I safely pull over and restart the car. It starts fine but is running at about 400 rpm and shaking pretty noticeably. Then I look in the rearview and black smoke is pouring out of the exhaust pipes! I was just a couple blocks from home (luckily) so I limped home and got right on the computer. I am so frustrated by this. I have owned nothing but Hondas for over 10 years and have never had ANY major problems, yet this new Acura has now become much less reliable than my '97 Ford Expedition with 130,000 miles on it!!!! I have to work tomorrow so I won't be able to have the car towed to Jax (again) until Friday. Anyway, just thought I'd share my misfortune.......

Definitely sounds like a major engine problem there, but it should be covered under warranty. DO you not have the roadside assistance anymore? Why do you have to wait until Friday to get it towed in. I'd call in sick tomrrow and have it towed in. Make sure they provide you a loaner car for the duration though.

Yeah my light came on too, had it in the garage for that reason twice now and in two weeks she is going in for the week and I get a loaner car until it's fixed. I also noticed a huge decrease in gas mileage (actually worst then my 8 cylinder truck that I got rid of for the tsx)however I haven't experienced the black smoke and cutting out yet, hopefully it will be fixed by then, good luck, keep us posted.

Rattles are one thing, but to have the TSX cut out on you like that...shame on Honda.

Good luck on getting it fixed.

Well this soap opera keeps going. So I called Acura Care and had the car towed all the way to Jax again (meaning another hour long ride with a strange repo-man). I calmly told the service manager the problems I had and he took it all down, asking me some questions as well. Then, after sitting in the lobby for some time, he takes me into the garage and shows me the diagnostic computer hooked up to my car saying that there was nothing wrong with it! I told him that the car was definitely running rich and had shut off on me three times already but he just said that there was nothing they could do if there was no error code (I even said "So I guess I should just get used to random stalling on my new Acura, huh?"). Well, I argued as much as I could but in the end I ended up having to drive the car back home, 70 miles away. But wait, that's not the end of the story. Predictably, as I exited the highway in my town the car stuttered and clunked to a hault! It started back up but when I pressed the gas it hesitated and then I heard a loud pop from the back (presumably a back fire) before it finally took off. Then, as if on cue, the CEL came back on! I immediately called Duval Acura and told the manager so now I have to have the car towed back tomorrow to find out what the hell is wrong with the damn thing now. I am so pissed off at my car right now, I just want to kick it. Sad to say, but this is now officially the WORST car I have ever owned (and I owned a Pontiac Fiero once so that is saying something). I still love Honda/Acura, but they will NOT be getting my business next time around......

majin,

that sucks man. I hope they find the problem. I'd be pissed too if that happened to me. Who's paying for all the towing?

Acura has been picking up all of the bills, to their credit.

oh come one guys, lighten up.

every car malfunctions. It's a machine with thousands of moving parts with an enormous amount of pressure.

Take it to the dealer and have them fix it. If they can duplicate the problem, then your car will be fixed.

majin,

Has your car been fixed? If so, what was the solution?

Hmm, this is old, but to update what happened, it turns out that I ran over a log in the road which unsubtly removed the 02 sensor at the catalytic converter along with half of my muffler assembly. How the guys at the dealership didn't figure this out until then is still a mystery to me. Anyway, they replaced all of the damaged parts under warranty (to their credit) and I never had a problem with the car again. I traded it in last year on a new 06 Civic Si which I still have so I cannot say anything else against the TSX. All in all, I would say it was a good car that went bad due to no fault of its own....

That Acura dealer should be ashamed of themseleves. There is more to diagnosing a car than just checking the engine.
