Comptech Exhaust Rattle
Comptech Exhaust Rattle
I, like a few others, have been experiencing a rattle from my Comptech SS exhaust; specifically coming from inside the passenger side can. Today I called them and they are going to fully warranty it. My new can is on its way. Also, if you do warranty it, make sure to get a new gasket.
Again, one more reason to buy Comptech... GREAT customer support.

i dont know where my rattle is coming from.
it comes at idle with the AC on - it goes away when i rev the motor a lil.
triz08 had this same problem - he cut some metal off some heatshield.
i went back to the shop that installed my exhuast - and we had it on a lift and we stil coulndt find the noise source.
how are they sending you a new can? i dont understand.

My car made the same noises you all have described, at idle... a rattling noise; audible from within the car as well. So with the car turned on, I went to the rear exhaust cans and listened... sure enough, the sound was coming from inside of the passenger side exhaust can; there are baffles and such in side of it. So I tapped the can with the palm of my and sure enough... the rattle was there. So I call comptech's tech line and warranty service and explained the issue to them.
They are sending me out that specific piece to unbolt and send back to them. Because it is a warranty claim, they charge me for the new piece and refund me back the amount when they receive mine old one.
I can take video of all this if someone wants to see exactly what I'm talking about.

Yeah, the sound.... sounds like its coming from the exhaust touching somewhere, but it isn't. BTW, don't breathe to much when you listen to the exhaust while its running.

I have 25,000 miles on my comptech exhaust and i have no rattles. This might be a dumb question, but did you guys get the car up on a lift and tighten all the bolts again? All of the exhaust systems I have ever had, after i put then on, i would tighten the bolts again after a few thousand miles. Oh well just a thought

As mentioned before, my rattle is definitely coming from the passenger side can. But to answer your question, yeah, checked everything included the compression ring for the a to b pipe.
I was able to pin point the exact location of the rattle in my exhaust. The tip seems to be a 2 pieces; the outer wall that we see and an inner wall. Well, it was the inner wall of the passenger side tip that was rattling. Nothing I can do to fix it, but I do have my new can on and oh the silence....
Only problem I've run into is it seems like Comptech still perceives this as a regular buy, so I'm trying to straighten it out with them.

Called Comptech back and the guy is going to overnight me the new gasket and shipping label. Gotta tell, I'm very pleased with Comptech's responsiveness.
dzuy, sorry to here you haven't located your rattle. R U certain it isn't touching something and it needs an adjustment?

I fixed my problem. Its on the crossmember right behind of the can. Theres a black peice of metal with a little lip going across the car, and has a little indent where the stock exhuast should somewhat lay through. I tore off about a half inch of the surronding metal, and it fixed the problem. Deffinatlly not the safest solution, but after i put the highflow cat on, rattling was HORRIBLE! If anyone needs more info i might have a pic somewhere
Heres a link to a pic of what i tore off. I cant seem to post the picture itself. I recently smoothed the edges and made it look cleaner. But this will give you an idea of where my rattling was coming from.

Clean cut!!!
Just joking... do what ever makes it work man!!
I bent that piece back because I could see on the exhaust tube where it had been hitting slightly. Got rid of the one rattle with that method but still have a resonance type sounding rattle. I have an AT and it only happens when stopped in drive or reverse with the A/C on. And not all the time, only when a slight lug sound is on the engine, my guess from the A/C. It only happens "Barely" with the A/C off, and only sometimes. It got much better when I went with Jtso's (I think????) suggestion of replacing the rubber exhaust hangers with the firmer and slightly tighter Napa ones. This helped pull the exhaust up nice and seems to eliminate the sound for a time but it comes back after driving the car for about 10 minutes. My guess is the heat makes the rubber hanger, especially the one in the middle, more pliable and allows it to vibrate more. I think I am going to try and buy more Napa replacement hangers, cut some in half and try adding them to the existing ones. Also, I have the Comptech header which is only bolted at the engine and held at the bottom by another, much thicker, hanger. Maybe I'll try replacing this one as well. One other thing, you can't hear the rattle outside the car, just when inside. This is why I think it has something to do with resonance and not necessarily anything toughing. Anyone have any suggestions besides get a MT?
