Is your car pretty new? Sometimes there's oil on the exhaust that has to burn off new cars.

I agree that what you're smelling is probably just new car burn off - but the seat warmers in my TL used to give a mild burning smell if I left them on high too long - FWIW.

I also noted the burning smell for the first few days and few hundred miles. It's gone now. Fortunately, the leather smell remains....mmmm!

Yup, i had the same smell as well when my car was new. It was very noticeable after the car has been driven, but from the outside only. As soon as i open to door and get off, i would smell it. The odour gradually decreased the more i drove the car.

Funny thing is, after i did my first oil change last weekend, the smell was completely gone...

It takes about a week or two for the plastics and lubricants to adjust to the operating temperatures and "burn off".

You don't have one of those new 5-series whose seats catch on fire from the seat heaters?

I still get that burning smell and my car is a little over a year old. I only notice it when I have my heater set above 70 and running for a while.

Sometimes I smell a slight smell like that when the heater has been on for a while, and I've had the car for about 9 months.

Burning plastic? Maybe you're thinking too hard....

J/K - never had that problem, and with our weather, the heat is always on.

Yeah its the same smell you get when you get a new exhaust put in. I think it may the lining inside the exhaust system which needs to be "burnt off"..'

Damn plastic bags. My colleague had the same problem. Just that the plastic bag that he ran over in the car park was a bag filled with rubbish.
