Airbag light - faulty sensor

Like many TSX owners have experienced, the airbag light on my 2004 TSX began staying on earlier this year. Took it to the dealer. They replaced the seat belt buckle which did not fix the problem. Now they tell me that it is a faulty sensor and want me to pay $1500+ to repair. I think it should be free (although I would be willing to pay for the part).

I am looking for others who have had this experience with replacing the airbag sensor. Did the dealer cover at no cost to you?

Update - the dealer says that they need to replace the entire SRS unit including the sensor. They said that the warranty on SRS is 8 years. My 2004 is out of warranty.

Part itself is $490. They will give me a discount on the labor and only charge $300. Appreciate any advice or insight that could help me convince them that all of this should be covered.

SRS control unit is available for < $100 (car-part.com, ebay). Not sure what you mean by "air bag sensor". Do you mean the impact sensor on the front end? In any case, you can find used parts and get a body shop to install them for less money.

good luck

I had mine diagnosed by the dealer last year, it was a faulty front sensor which I found on eBay for $25...but now I notice sometimes if I unbuckle before turning off the car, the airbag light comes on again.

This is the issue I have - leads me to believe the seat belt sensor is my issue, not the front sensor because I can keep the airbag light off if I just buckle the belt before I start the car and make sure I don't unbuckle until the car is off.

Did you ask for the airbag code(s)?

Do you think even someone like Autozone could come up with the code to know the problem?

Pretty sure when I asked they said airbag codes would not show up by their ob2 scanners.
