6 Speed Manual Transmission----- :werd:

I am in a cold climate, and when I start the car its fine. The second I begin driving that is where the problem begins or maybe its not really a problem but very annoying. The clutch system and the shifter are very hard to move and make near grinding sounds going from 1st to 2nd gear. Its like the gears are jammed frozen or somethingb ecasue when the car temp is warm, the gears shift smoother. Is there nything to do to remedy the problem..?? Is there a reason why it does this....other than the cold temperature......

Im freakin curious cuz its really annoying to sort of force putting the car in gear.....

When it gets down to -15c or -20c here I notice that the transmission requires more effort. The transmission fluid is a little to thick under those conditions but once it warms up it's fine.

How cold is it when you are having trouble?

Could be your clutch cylinder is sticky. If it were any colder it would freeze.

Doesn't the tranny only warm up under drviving? So warming up your car and letting it idle does nothing for the tranny?

I don't know but when the car has been driven in the extreme cold until the temperature neeedle rises, then the clutching goes smoother......needless to say, do your 6spd manual transmissions make a "tooong" deepo thug sound when shifting?

When it was around -20ish here in Toronto, my clutch was stiff and takes longer than usual to return but I've never grined a gear tho.

I had that. It's not that it takes more effort. It's more of like a mini-grind as it gets into 2nd. As the tranny fluid warms up, it doesn't happen as often, but still does about 1/3 of the 1-2 shifts. Doesn't go away even after the weather gets warmer.
I had the dealer take a look and the tech said it was just a bit notchy, and it was normal. Well, they replaced my clutch master cylinder because of the creaking clutch pedal, and after driving around for 1 week with the new cylinder, the 1-2 grind disappeared! I suspect that there is not enough clutch movement that when you shift 1-2 that the clutch is actually still slightly engaged. Hope that you have the creaking clutch so that you can get the master cylinder changed.

I think this is normal for any cold MT.

Try double clutching into second. It helps a bit...

It happens to me as well when it's 25F and below. It's normal though, you just gotta live through it.

Its just because of the cold, nothing to worry about. Mine does the same thing in the bitter cold, but once it warms up its fine.
