Skunk2 Shift knob and home made "short shifter"
Well I jumped on the bandwagon and bought the Skunk2 shiftknob. I could not be happier. It is very heavy (heavier than the stock knob) which makes shifting very precise...it slides between gears very smoothly with ease.
I had a momo knob and it felt good and looked good, but it was so light the shifts just felt "eh". My only complaint with the Skunk2 was that the knob sat a little high with the locknut on but without the locknut, the shift pattern was crooked.
So I broke out my tap and die set and threaded the shifter down a little more. The Skunk2 knob is threaded all the way to the top of the knob so you can really crank it down. Now I can adjust the knob as high or as low as I want (I like a low short shift knob personally). But I can always raise it up with the locknut or put any other knob on and do the same.
The shifting distance has been reduced alot and it has that "snick snick" feel like my friends S2000. Here are some pics:
And here are a couple pics of my "custom" ipod mount... very convenient

so how much shorter are the shifts? any way to put a number on this?
i suggest this thread should also be cross-referenced to the "Do-It-Yourself Thread Index **Updated 11-14-05**" sticky. anyone feel otherwise?

Thanks alot everyone!
I am not sure exactly how much shorter the shifts are percentage wise, but I'd say the knob is about an inch lower and due to the extra weight, when you push it into the next gear, it follows through very nicely.
After seeing how nice Peter_bigblock's looks without the lock nut, I am thinking about putting the lock nut under the boot then cranking it tight. But I am afraid I will crack the plastic piece attached to the boot if I tighten it too much... I'll try it out tomorrow.
And the ipod case I bought happened to have that little plastic piece designed for use with an armband while jogging. A couple zip ties and my "ipod sliding off the seat when I go around a turn" problem was solved

It's not too bad to thread the shifter. The threads are 10 x 1.5 pattern so I stated with a 1/2" die then a 12 x 1.5, 11 x 1.5, 10 x 1.5. Just shaving a little at a time.
I picked up a tap and die set off of ebay for around 15 dollars.

Thanks again everyone, I have really been enjoying driving it with this setup.
The only other thing I'd love to make for this area of the car is some sort of trim ring for around the shifter and boot. I think they look awesome when done correctly. I installed one on my old WRX wagon, but it was a part already made for the STI that I was able to make fit with a little help from a dremel. Here is a pic of what I am talking about:
