What Type of Oil?

I've read a little about Amsoil adding performance and mpg vs. other synthetics and "regular" oil. I currently use Valvoline synthetic in my 04 TSX. What are others using and what do you recommend?

Mobil 1 Syn.

I really dont buy the whole Amsoil schtick. They claim you dont need to change the oil for 25000 miles, so even though you pay more for it, you save in the long run...bah

My first oil change was at around 5,000mi. at which time I had the dealer change the oil to Honda brand (or whatever the dealer uses). At 10,000mi. I again had the dealer change the oil but I supplied Mobil1 Synthetic 5W-30. From this point on it will be Mobil1. I'm currently at 11,800 and don't plan another oil change until 20,000mi. or one year, whichever comes first.

The car runs great, smooth, and I get good mileage so my recommendation would be to do the same.

Thanks. I don't know if there's much difference between Mobil 1 synthetic and Valvoline SynPower synthetic but I'll give the Mobil 1 a try. I'm not sure about the Amsoil schtick, either, but I have read in the Motor Oil Bible that Amsoil is very good oil. The Valvoline also came very highly rated, I think the Mobil 1 was mid-pack. When I switched from regular Valvoline to the SynPower I noticed that the car runs smoother, gets better mileage, and seems to have better throttle response. The last might be my mind playing tricks on me but I do think it makes a noticeable difference.

Thanks for the reponses! I read that Amsoil/Redline thread -- wow people are really getting hot over the issue. I don't think I've ever called anyone a "fucktard" while discussing motor oil. Seems a little juvenile.

The one that the dealer uses... I never ever bothered looking into it.

You know, sometimes I just feel the need to stoop to the noob's level every-so-often.

I can understand that -- the guy was, in my opinion, analyzing the shit out his oil. I'm new to this forum but I've been around cars long enough to know if you're trying to get horsepower out of your oil, you need a car with a bigger motor.

I use Mobil 1 also. Wal-Mart has a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 5-W30 for under $20. I take that into the dealer and tell them the oil is on the front seat.

But, I leave it on the floor in a plastic bag.

I have used Mobil-1 for the past 3 oil changes, works great, mileage went up about 5% for me. The oil pretty much resisted burning while in the engine compared to dino oil. the oil level with Mobil-1 never dipped enough for me to add more oil, and that's with my driving to the redline occasionally. Cost is good, changing it myself with mobil-1 only cost me slightly more than having to take to a shop to change my oil with dino oil. Amsoil might be good, but since it cost so much I gotta factor in the decreasing margin of benefits with that oil

Sorry if I'm repeating an observation from the many other, unreadably-long threads on this.

I keep reading posts from people who say they've been getting more power or better fuel efficiency after changing oils, but isn't it possible that some of this is just due to engine break-in? On my last car, it seems like it took something like 9500 miles / 15,000 km to reach optimal fuel efficiency.

And tons of placebo too.

I think I'll let the dealership put whatever oil they use during the oil change for the 5000 mile change and then at 10,000 miles, I'll switch over to Mobil 1 5W-30.

I plan on using Castrol Syntec 5w30, I've used Mobil 1 in the past, but my last car I used the Castrol and now I'm happy with that. Nothing against Mobil 1.
