Test pipe anyone?

I just got done putting together a test pipe and did a quick test before leaving for a business trip. I only had time to perform a pre-test with a scan tool to monitor the secondary O2 sensor activity and compare it with the reading after the test pipe. The reading seems normal and no CEL yet after a short drive around the block. I will follow up with more info once I return home.

I know most people use two anti-foulers but one seems to be good enough for the TSX as the O2 sensor is no longer in the path of exhaust flow. I drilled the hole completely through the anti-fouler. However, if I have to do it again, I think drilling the hole large enough to house the O2 sensor tip should be good enough. This retains the small opening at the tip of the anti-fouler.

Some pics...

Anti-fouler Just enlarge the cavity without drilling through should do the trick.

Once again, that is very pretty work! Though I know it is highly illegal, I'd wager the TSX runs pretty damn clean with no catalytic converter.

Nice!
Can't wait to see the results.
How has this effected your exhaust sound?

Very nice fab job I wonder if this will yield gains without the ability to tune the car though.

Thanks guys! I will hit the dyno when I return home from my trip. I don't think it increases any significant amount of noise comparing to the high flow cat. If it did, it's not noticeable like installing an aftermarket exhaust system.

The pipe and O2 bung are stainless but the flanges are mild steel. I wish someone would sell some stainless flanges. Currently, I can buy the rear flange but the front flange is still being hand made. If anyone knows where to get custom flanges made, please let me know.

I need to go get an anti fouler for my comptech header and rt cat setup cause I have a check engine light that wont go away. Also my car is idling at 500rpm and has stalled on me twice.

Keep in mind the ECU doesn't use the secondary O2 sensor to monitor A/F. Therefore, it should remain the same 14.7:1 as part of the ECU closed-loop program.

Watch out Johnny! If "the gen" finds out you can machine like that, they're gonna move you from your 4th floor "baller" seat to the C.U.P. and you'll loose your Space Needle view.

^^^LOL.

Just borrow from your new equity and mod the TSX even more. That way, all interest on the mods will be tax deductable.

Do a stepping drill method. Remember not to drill it all the way through. Btw, I just did one like 2 minutes ago.

Anti-foulers!

When I was 16 and got my first car ($400 '75 Ford Granada...don't ask I'm old okay) it would burn oil like crazy. So I would pull the sparkplugs once a month and use a brass wire wheel on a drill and clean off all the build-up. After doing this for about 6 months I saw a set of anti-foulers at a local autoparts store. I thought sweet, no more pulling the plugs and cleaning them all the time.
Well I installed the anti-foulers over my plugs and the car ran great!!! It turned into a monster, great throttle response, awesome pick-up....heck I could even do a 1 wheel burn-out if I put the rear tire on some wet leaves! It was about after one week that the first spark plug blew out of the engine on my way to school. It was completely melted, as were all the others!

Point of the story is don't use anti-foulers as anti-foulers!

Thanks, JTso. The pack I bought came with two, so I'll have a couple shots at drilling it straight. Be great to have a drill press. (Be great to have a lot of things.)

When are you gonna take your car to a dyno to see what gains the test pipe yielded?

Some quick updates... I took the car out for a spin after a week of being away. The test pipe does seem to make the exhaust slightly louder. The secondary O2 sensor reading with the updated anti-fouler appears to be normal as if a CAT is installed. Still no CEL under various of driving condition. However, there is an increase of exhaust odor when the car is in the garage idling.

I probably won't take the car to the dyno until version 2 is ready. V2 will be a resonated test pipe to allow free flow without the noise.

What kind of air fuel ratio where you getting from the ECU via the ODBII port?
Did you get a chance to test that yet by chance Johnny?

Thanks for the update

To be more specific, do you have the air fuel ratio while the ECU is in open loop mode?
Does the scan tool you have display whether the ECU is open or closed loop mode?

I have not measured the A/F yet. You will know the ECU is in open-loop mode when the O2 sensor registers 0.00v in voltage mode (not being used), or simply when it's no longer maintaining 14.7:1 in A/F mode.

It depends on the interest and the cost of the materials. I might go buy a bandsaw and a drill press to make things a little easier. Because cutting thick metal plates by hands sucks. Cutting stainless plates would be even more difficult. I probably could use the same machine tools to make the ETD brackets.

Update... dyno results

I decided to dyno the test pipe today. The weather is about 19 degrees warmer than the last dyno in May. There result is about the same as my high flow cat = no gain. The main difference is the leaner A/F.

Quick Reply: Test pipe anyone?
