The sound of my Injen CAI

Got bored today, so I recorded the CAI at full throttle.

MP3 file format, 128KB in size, VBR recording. It's a touch "louder" and more "visceral" in person, but you get the idea.

LINK

The shifts and revs are a bit slow, but I was going up a decent grade (probably close to 7%). But, you can now distinctly hear the VTEC cam jump.

Through the ClubTSX group buy. A guy named "projecTSX" works at an autoshop and was the test mule for the original CAI.

$255 shipped. In production and on sale, but limited availability. Also only available in polished aluminum, no black powder coat yet.

i also found a site that's selling it for less shipped. http://www.ptuning.com
i found the site from the links page in Injen's website, so i think they are one of the bigger dealers of injen product.

Selling it for less, but they are still listed as "ON ORDER". From what I understand, mass availability won't be until late December, but that's just word of mouth.

I know it's been covered before but any driving impressions so far? Where you one of the guys that had taken their resonator out? Differences there?

CAI. I have yet to try the short ram style. (I'll do that around dyno time...if I ever get there).

Does it void the warranty if you install the aftermarket intake? I went to one of a dealer in Seattle, and they told me that it might void the warranty?

Yes, I did take the resonator out.

Overall impressions are:

1) midrange torque does "feel" like it is improved. That may be a feeling of sluggishness from the non-resonator setup.

2) Sound is obviously great and you can hear the VTEC changeovers.

3) High end still seems a BIT anemic, but I think that's due to the smoothness of the engine and lack of VTEC "kick" of old.

4) It does "seem" peppier, but it might be the sound.

5) I can turn off the loudness, by taking it easy on the throttle. Definite plus for neighborhood/business driving.

Bottom line, it makes my driving experience better. I also anticipate future gains through Hondata, etc.

You know, technically it's not, but here's the deal. Unless the dealer has a convincing reason why the intake directly caused the engine problem, there's no issue. If there's excessive dirt in the engine, first thing they are going to do is point to your oiled filter on the intake. But if your catalytic converter fails, the intake isn't to blame.

Easiest way, if you have an engine problem, take it off and replace the stock one. The less questions/excuses the better. Remember that it is up to the dealer/service to say you don't have a warranty.

There's some debat about that. Eventually it will learn. But I'm not sure if you can "reset" the ECU since it is flash based.

I have just talked to one of the installer in my area. They said that the total cost including installation will be around $280 inclusive of tax. But that would be the normal Metallic stuff.. Not the black carbon stuff. Does it make a hugh different for the black and metallic material?

The black poweder coated pipes are not available yet. All in all, it just looks differnet. I personally like the shiny.

this is another reason that makes me think the icebox might be the best intake. AEM obviously saw something with the gains to provide only a SRI. The icebox is basically just an SRI, but wrapped in a plastic box with a snorkel to a cold air source so you don't have the heat soak problems. Time will tell.

well aem's reasoning for only producing the SRI is:

"AEM spends extensive time developing each air induction system for maximum performance. Whenever possible, we design a Cold Air system that routes the filter outside of the engine compartment to take advantage of cooler ambient air temperatures, and offer a Short Ram system as an economical alternative to our Cold Air system.

However, tuning the inlet pipe is crucial to performance, and certain applications respond to runner lengths that will not allow us to create a true cold air system. In these cases, AEM manufactures a Short Ram system only, as this design creates the most useable power for a given application. "

was just checkin out some stuff on the ptuning.com
i feel a little let down, the mazda 6 gets 21 hp/ 24ish tourque at 5000 rpm with the injen intake. but the TSX gets 11 at some 7000 rpm or something.
i suppose its a bigger motor, but still feels a little weak

Also keep in mind that the Mazda stock intake could just really suck ass.

Well, I now have 2 sets of stickers. I have the 2 from Injen and just got some from Bob's Auto (projecTSX) with "Barbarian Racing" that came with my receipt.

Cool.

i just installed my self made CAI. sounds good when pushing the car to higher rpms. i will post some pics later on and maybe a sound clip. at first i was just running a tube from the stock airbox in place of the resonator like I-MOD or Moda-Way (forgot who it was). Now i attached another tube (to replace the stock airbox) to the original one i had and put a k&n cylinder filter at the end of it. im sure the performance gains arent much, but its a cheap 40 dollar mod that is good enough for now. the sound of the intake without the stock airbox + resonator is ALOT louder than just having the resonator removed.

I don't think Injen will have a short ram any time soon, but the CAI is a 2piece that can be converted to a shortram.

You can call the guy and ask. His TSX was the test mule for it, so he does have SOME contact with these guys and seemed to pull off a 20+ piece buy.

Write and ask. (search ClubTSX.com for "projecTSX" or "Injen" and you'll find the dynos for a 5AT and his contact info around page 5).

I am planning to move to Arizona here. Will the CAI or SRI work better in such an extreme weather? I don't want my engine to get burn by Phoenix's sun.. ehhe

I live in Phoenix and i knw the CAI will work much better than the SRI here i mean for cying out lud we are still in the triple digits and its supposed to be fall not summer! Also some ppl debate whether or not its pointless to get a CAI here in AZ because the pavement gets so hot but just think how hot ur engine gets. The pavement will never be as hot as the engine bay. im sayin on a cool day ur engine could put out temps as much as 130 degrees to 140 specially here... basically go with the CAI.
