Removal ashtray for mp3 mount

I just bought a 2007 TSX w/ navi. I recently got a Creatize Zen mp3 player and was looking for a place to mount it. The "this is not an ashtray" compartment seems like a good place but the player is a little big to slide in there. I wanted to know if you can easily take that whole red compartment out. And if so what's behind it a backing? or wires? My main concern is that I'm going to pry the thing off it's going to look bad and I won't be able to put it back in. Thanks in advance to replies.

It screws in from the back IIRC. without it there you're going to see a bunch of wire looms and the top of the stock stereo amp. There would be nothing there to prevent your mp3 player from falling down inside the console. If you want to take a quick look around you can remove the compartment above that one without any tools. Just place one hand inside flat against the left side and the other flat against the top and pull it forward. There are just friction clips that hold it in. When you're done, just push it back in.

I looked into doing exactly what you're talking about and in the end determined it would be too much work for a solution that wouldn't be all that great. In the end I wired everything up so my iPod can hang out in the center arm rest.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll look into a different solution also.

the red thing is just a small insert not the tray itself. If you wanted I have my iPod there. It's easy to take out and mod it if you don't remove the entire pocket you'll have no black pit of doom to swallow your mp3 player. Here is a pic of my set up to illustrate what I'm saying:

Ok, so your saying that the red "not an ashtray" is a removable insert? I was hoping to just remove that because it would give me enough room to slide my player into the vacant slot. So I'm a little confused as to if the red thing is attached w/ screws etc.. and would leave me w/ an opening with no back? or if it is simply a tray that can be removed revealing a slightly larger space behind it. Let me know if anyone has had experience w/ what i'm trying to ask. Thanks

The red part does come out. I'm pretty sure it involves screws from the back. The whole assembly with door on it has 4 screws, 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. You need to take compartment above out, as I described and the whole panel with the shifter and cup holders. That part is also only held in by friction clips but it's a much bigger pain in the ass.

I'm 90% sure that when you take out the red part it's just open into cavity behind it.

Clee, can you close that door at all or is it permanently open?

The red part is held on with 4 "clips" (for lack of a better term). I replaced mine with a painted piece of plastic to mount my Parrot hands-free screen/control module on over the winter last year. As LukeaTron said, you'll have to take apart the centre console (shifter/cup holders) to get at it though.

yes you can shut it when you take out the ipod and just slide the dock back and it closes no problem. Yes the red pocket is held in by clips on the back which are a bit of a pain to pop out but it is possible as said and proven by ryanhook. To remove it you need to remove the top pocket and the center console cover. The removal of those items have been discussed a million times on here so just search for it =)
