Question Question about 7th gen Accord ...

Sorry to post this since most of you own a TSX, but I'm getting no response in accord forums and I know some of you are experienced with newer Accords or own one/have owned one. So if you have an Accord with 5spd MT and have taken the shifter off, maybe you can answer my question...

I have a type-R shift knob like the one in the old Integra type-R. It looks like the TSX knob but without leather and of course has the 5-speed pattern. I don't care for the factory shift knob on the newer accords, so I was thinking that if I get one I could put the Type-R knob on there and it would look cool with the silver trim.

Anyway, the stock knob is kinda long and looks like it connects rather low, so if I replaced it would it give me shorter throws? In other words, since the type-R is a smaller knob, would it sit lower to the console?

Thanks,
Slats

It depends on where the threading is in the stock knob, but I wouldn't expect much more than a few millimeters difference. That's not exactly going to make a huge difference in your throws.

Yeah, you would think it wouldn't make much of a difference, but like you said it depends on where the threads are in the knob. That is what I'm trying to find out. If they are at the very bottom portion, that would make a big difference since the knob is really long.

Well, if it's anything like the knob from my Integra, which had the threads really deep in the knob, it won't make much of a difference. Either way, don't expect this to make a huge difference.

Does your factory shift knob have a retaining nut underneath it?

I replaced my factory knob with a OEM knob that was slighty shorter, but at the same time elimanated the retaining nut and spacer. It sits so much lower that it made a dramatic difference in the throw. Although no-one here believed it

Then I did the Comptech SS and my throws are almost non-existent

lowering the knob sounds nice, but is your knob off-center? it might just be the picture, but it looks a big slanted w/o the retaining nut. is that the old s2000 knob?

Well, I don't have the car. I was just wondering because I've been looking at some. I can tell you that if it does have the retaining nut it is not visible so I highly doubt it. Does that mean if I used the type-R knob with the nut it could raise it? That would suck.

I've driven the 6th gen accords and their shift quality is nowhere near as good as the 7th and the throw is longer. But I think they both have the knob that clips to the boot or something. If I could get the throws about an inch lower that would be cool.

BTW, any pics after your SS install?

It is slightly off-center w/o the nut -- that would drive me nuts (no pun intended)! But I think the height is perfect. I wouldn't even want it any lower. I saw an M3 with a knob that was as low as the console and it looked stupid.

His knob looks at lot like the one I'm talking about. I think it looks better w/o leather.

It just so happened that it lined up even without the nut. I, however, like to have the pattern aimed toward me, so I cranked on it a little bit and got it tilted.

It is exactly like an old S2000 knob except it has a black pattern instead of red.

The '03 and on S2K comes with a knob identical to the TSX, with the leather, but it has a black pattern......

No pics after the SS-it does not lower the shifter from the top, so it wouldn't look any different. The SS lowers the shifter from the bottom. I know it sounds weird; I was confused until I saw how it worked. It adds to the bottom of the shifter, where the shifter attaches to the cable.

Ok, that's what i figured. You can put the stock one on w/o the nut, but it wont go on straight, which I couldn't w/. I would like it a little bit lower though so the gap between the knob and boot wouldn't be so big.

Try a small rubber washer inside the knob so that the knob will line up to your liking......

That's a great idea! Does it have to go in straight or could you just jam it up in there before screwing it on?

It would only need to be the size of the shifter rod-you could rest it on top before you screw it on.
