Sure why not gains are probably similar, but honestly, there's no such thing as a "poor man" with a 35k car, if you’re interested in saving a few bucks sure why not.
why not just remove the resonator completely and just have the rubber part from the intake box itself sticking down? Put the K&N filter in...and it'll probably sound better than what he had on there. Or you could just slap on a round/cone filter, like I did, directly into the intake tube so you can just leave out the box altogether. If you get 3.5" intake filter, than you need a PVC pipe to connect it. If you get a 2.5" (me) you can just stick it on the tube directly.
I'm glad to hear no one (so far) thinks it's really stupid. I let my buddy talk me into doing that a few weeks ago. He's a mod enthusiast, I'm not so much. Sounds good, and got a bunch of plastic out from under the hood. I'll try to post a pic of all the pieces left over (resonator, other ducts). My only concern now is that the intake is facing down, a few inches (or so it seems) from the road. Out here in Tucson we get severe rains two to three months of the year, and they don't believe in culverts, so some of our roads turn into rivers. What are the chances that my car will aspirate the water? BTW, just noticed that my profile still has my in NY...will have to update that.

Theres plenty of people who cut up their stock intake and make it more flowing, instead of a brand name intake.
To keep the noise down and let it look stock as well.
I go to school in buffalo, ny where it snows, and rains like crazy. Cold weather, and lots of it.
I have the hydroshield on my Injen intake, I try to stay away from massive puddles, but its less frequent that we hydrolock than rsxs. My friends rsx and his intake sits towards the bottom end of their bumper.
Our's is at least under the corner of the light so, technically you need to see the wheel in a ditch of water to really get hydrolocking.

To be honest with you, I don't think they're equivalent. However, I agree, if you aren't a mod enthusiast or just starting, this would be a good way to go.
I personally care for the incremental improvements a comptech icebox has....larger airbox volume, airhorn, and airhorn pointed forward. I even hollowed out the plastic vents on the front of my car to let the cold air go directly in there. I'm fairly certain that my setup has much better flow than the poorman's intake.
In fact, I've done that poorman's intake to 2 cars now, a civic and an integra. I always ended up shelling out for either an Injen style, and then ultimately the Comptech Icebox.
Does it make much a difference? I can't say for certain. But I'd rather start with what will maximize the parts I plan on putting on. $150 bucks isn't a bad price considering that it will probably make your other parts that much better.

First off, hacking up stock parts is a bad move. Taking off the piece and just leaving it off with the K&N filter is what I ran for years... guess what, the Comptech provided better response because the lid is actually bigger. Just don't hack up parts is my point on this mod.
