Someone go for that SRI intake. It sounds mad. With a heat-insulating airbox around it, there are actually gains that can be felt by the butt dyno.

Apex'i has THE best filters in the universe. High flow, and proven abilit yto clean the air. They are the only ones I know who claim both.

So this airbox is it something you could you buy? or is this something you have to construct yourself out your own ingenuity?

You might have to custom fabricate it as I haven't seen any that fit the Apexi. I made my own following the concept of the GruppeM. Here are a few pics. The Apexi filter's low turbulence design gives it a low growl. Not a high pitched one like most CAI/SRIs. Plus, being a dry filter, there won't be any fouling of your sensors. That's a BIG PLUS.

Here are some pics of my airbox that I made from 1.0 mm sheet aluminium and 1.5mm rubber as insulation. Also has a cold air feed from the fog light cover to the bottom of the airbox.

I also have a flyby vid of my car with just the Apexi intake, before i made the airbox. (But I don't have a direct linking host)

Bottom line is that among filters, the Apexi is one of the BEST. Filtration is also as very good as it is a paper filter, unlike those oiled filters which have huge gaps in the cotton layer.

On the Carb question, it is a yes and no. Yes because technically it does not require a carb exemption to be legal, but no because cops and smog people don't know what carb exemptoin is really required for therefore they may bust you for it.

So what does everybody think......, do you think we can get better gains out of this type of setup......., compared to that of a standard CAI / ice box........????? I kind of like the idea of having the filter under the hood (for easy access)...., while still funneling cold air to the enclosure straight from the fog light holes in the bumper...... I would really like to do this if it turns out it would be worth it... seems more safe/practical/gain-full.... what do we think???

I wonder if you could mount that inside the stock air box....., and connect the stock air box to the fog light hole in the bumper with large diameter pipe.... It might be to small but maybe it could be modified slightly......, it looks like the box that he created in rather small as well........?????

Well, the main thing is, Carb exemption is needed when parts where emissions related equipment are mounted are swapped out. Headers need to be approved because the O2 sensor is mounted there. Many intakes need to be approved because there are air temp sensors and vacuum hoses involved. Exhaust systems DO NOT need to be carb approved because they go on after the cat and there is actually no emissions equipment involved.

This intake does not relocate or involved changing the mounting of any sensors. See, the stock elbow is still used. So this part does not need to be approved. BUT, many cops just lump it all together. "Intakes need carb numbers."

I've been runnning it in stages. First, I had an open pod for about 1 month. Then I had a pure aluminium enclosure for about an additional 3 weeks. I insulated the airbox using rubber sheeting and ran for 1 week before I finally added in cold air piping.

BTW, here's a flyby vid of the apexi running as an exposed pod. Exhaust and everything else were stock.

No, you make your own enclosure. How you do it is up to you, but the Apexi intake itself is one of the best pod filters because it is dry and filters as well as the Honda paper material.

The stock airbox is just not slightly narrower, so it won't enclose the filter.

We should start another thread for the airbox. It's not fair to hijack MrHeelToe's thread.

Can anyone tell me how's BMC filter? Some people suggest me for this filter as they are so good, it's Masarati and Porsche OEM filter. How good are they, I don't know, but they are like $99.99USD each.

aaronng, do you know what's the size I should pick for Apexi filter?? I have the Injen CAI, where would you suggest to buy and how much?? THX

Measure the piping diameter of your injen CAI. Apexi has generic sizes so you can bolt it onto your CAI. You'll need a rubber extension sleeve with hose clamps as the Apexi's filter side is a "male".
500-A025 : 80mm
500-A026 : 75mm
500-A027 : 70mm

Here's what it looks like:

Because of that adapter on the filter side, you'll find that the 75mm Apexi filter will sit lower than the Injen filter and increases your chances of hydrolock when driving through floods.

As to where and price, I'm in Australia. Can't help you there. But if I was in the US, I'd get from a trusted seller.

I drive EXTRA cautious when it's rainning, cause I'm afraid of hydrolock as well. I need to find this filter now.

BTW, did you stated that the Apexi's are paper filter? So they don't need to oil?? How to clean them?? any advice?

Yes, they are dry. No need to oil. To clean it, you vacuum the outside and then use compressed air on the inside (reversing a vacuum cleaner would be ideal) and blow the remained of the embedded dirt out. Some people also claim that you can wash it in water, but to me, paper + water = mulch. So I won't be using water to clean mine. Replacement filters are also sold for an alright price (about the same as your TSX oem panel filter).

The ONLY think you need to be concerned about when it is raining is how deep of a puddle you drive through. Rain and moisture in the air are not going to hydrolock the engine. Neither is getting the filter a little damp. You risk hydrolock by driving through a puddle that is over a few inches deep and submerging the filter.
