If you run it as an exposed pod in the engine bay, not much gains, even with the butt dyno. No vtec kick when passing 6000rpm. The induction roar was to die for.
I made an enclosure that was insulated and ran a pipe to the bumper to supply cold air. Feels better, sounds quieter and I can feel the vtec kick at 6000rpm.
So look at making an enclosure if you want gains. Even a simple heatshield would be good.

couple questions for you guys: first, i've seen some sri setups on various cars that have the same heatshield idea you have -- basically, close off the filter from all sides including the top -- but to close the top they've fabricated the heat shield to seal to the car hood's insulation using a soft rubber seal similar to a door or window seal. i think that would do the same as aaronng's excellently-crafted "airbox" enclosure with the added benefit that it's incredibly easy to access the filter. what are your thoughts?
second question, i have a diy sri similar to this -- it's basically a 3.5" o.d. aluminum pipe, about 8" long, with a k&n filter on the end, stuck into the stock rubber intake pipe. is there any reason to believe that the apex'i setup is superior to that in terms of horsepower?

I think we are getting into hair splitting here. I think the APEXi filter is better, but any benifit you get is probably not going to be felt all that much.

As long as it is sealed, it's good. Remember to have about an inch of temperature-resistant foam material that comes into contact with the hoot insulation. If you make the whole thing out of plastic, you'll have an indentation on the insulation.
