Intake Air Temperature

EDIT: Mods, I apologize if I placed this thread incorrectly. It seemed the most appropriate, as this is mainly an inquiry related to engine performance/air intakes.

Tonight I installed a ScanGauge II in my TSX. I put it in the cubby above "Not An Ashtray" and got a very clean install out of it thanks to the lightbulb hole already in the cubby. It's a neat little device, and more of a "fun to have" than essential tool to be sure.

I have it set to monitor IAT, among other things. Today it was around 75f when I took my test run. At idle, my IAT seems to sit around the 107-110f mark (the pic below was taken at startup). After a stint of driving around town, I got it down to 90f. I haven't done any highway miles yet; that will come on the commute to work tomorrow morning.

I'm wondering if anyone else has monitored IAT in the TSX, and what would be considered normal? I'm running an Injen in CAI mode presently, and have full exhaust bolt-ons (H/C/E) aside from that.

Hey Dave, unfortunately this thing can't monitor A/F, it only has a gauge to tell you whether you are in Closed or Open Loop mode - not particularly useful.

I scored this on eBay, a bunch of sellers on there are selling it with free shipping.

If you pick one up PM me and I'll let you know how I did the install, it was real simple.

Looking forward to the next big meet.

If u could actually change ur air/fuel ratio then yea that would b a real cool unit 2 buy. But if all it does it just monitor it then It would b just a "fun 2 have" unit. Looks good and it looks like u did a killer install on it, very clean. Nice job.

It should be a bit higher with the stock intake, probably somewhere between the IAT for the CAI and an SRI. Try putting your intake in SRI mode for a while and split the difference between temperatures to get a good estimate.

If you have the new Injen CAI/SRI intake, can you put it in SRI mode just to see how much hotter it is? I have my Injen in SRI right now and it would be a good thing to know if I should put it back into CAI mode. Well actually I have been considering buying a new intake that is CARB and I need to pick between CAI and SRI, or maybe just go with the CT icebox

My Injen is convertable to SRI. I was going to hold off until the fall to make the swap, but now you've got my curious regarding the performance difference, and I need to do the test with similar air temperatures for it to be worthwhile. If I find time this weekend I will swap back to SRI and post some impressions.

By the way, with my CAI setup, my IAT seems to sit between 5-10 degrees above the external air temperature while the car's in motion. If I idle for a while or end up in stop-n-go traffic, IAT will creep higher and higher, which makes sense logically.

UPDATE: I swapped back to SRI today, and also installed the AEM Dryflow filter in place of the Injen filter (mine was two years old and I didn't feel like cleaning/oiling it).

Impressions: there's no doubt about it, the car pulls harder in low gears and has quicker throttle response in SRI mode. I noticed it last year when I swapped and again today, it just can't be contested.

IAT: an SRI should really be called a Hot Air Intake. The outside temperature was 70* today during my test run. In CAI, my IAT would vary between probably 85* (idle/traffic) and 73* (consistent cruising speed) on conditions similar to today's. In SRI, at idle my IAT was reaching anywhere as high as 110*. It took a freeway run at speeds consistently at or above 80mph to bring the IAT down to 80*, and only once was I able to get it to 78* for a few minutes.

Conclusion: I love the throttle response and low-end pull of the SRI, but would like to see my IAT consistently lower. Possible solution: install a velocity stack/air tube setup to feed the Dryflow filter cold air from my foglight duct.

I may or may not get around to that this season. For now, I'll run SRI.

Thanks. I like it. I'd rather it filled out the whole cubby, as that would look cleaner, but it gets the job done and is out of the way when I want it to be.

There was a guy on here a year or two ago who did basically what you're describing. I don't remember what results he got.
