how difficult is a header install?
how difficult is a header install?
was woundering how much of a pain it is to install header on these cars. i can do most basic mechanical things, so kinda handy id say. is evrything easy to reach? are there any known problems? i dont know if its even worth it but considering it eliminates one cat it should give at least some gains. thanx.
Not hard at all. Basic tools and plain muscle. You might be for some finger yoga when its time to take the old manifold off and installing the new one. Make sure to spray some penetrating lubes on the bolts to make it easier to loosen them.
Its simple if you've done it before and know what to expect. However, if you really take the time to look at it, its a couple of bolts. Couldn't be simpler. The right tools, the right prep, and you could do it in a 2 hours not rushing anything and having a beer afterwards.

There are a couple of gotchas in doing the install. For instance, it is easier to disconnect the cat to cat-back connection than it is to disconnect the header to cat. So taking the entire header and cat off is a little easier.
Second, buying new bolts (depending upon if you are in the salt belt and age of the car) is very helpful beforehand. All my bolts were very rusted back when I did this with my 04 TSX, but others didn't have the same issue.
Third, you might find that after you put the car on jack stands, that using your jack to lower the exhaust on (after you remove a few hangers) makes reaching some of the bolts much easier. Be careful not to lower the exhaust all the way down as it might put too much stress on the flex-pipe.
Finally, consider replacing the header, cat and exhaust gaskets. It isn't totally necessary I suppose, but I'm one to put new gaskets on to insure the seal is good. Nothing worse than having to do a job over because of a stupid, inexpensive part(s). If you have a bunch of wrenches and more importantly a good torque wrench and breaker bar, you shouldn't have any troubles.

Overall it isn't a hard installation, just slightly annoying at times, but as moda_way said, the right tools (and a good guide) make all the difference in the world.
Its very easy and straightfoward. Matter of fact, you can do it even with little car mechanic experience. Just take your time look everything over and you will be fine. It really is pretty straight foward, and there are alot of threads on here with helpful information.
