Header issue

Hey Guys, I am considering to put layway on Comptech header for my TSX from local and know about the rattle issue on AT only. I wonder if there is any issue on MT or not? Should I get Comptech or not? I spoke to saleman about the header for TSX, saleman said that Comptech is better quality and performance than DC sports. But Topspeed has issue with carb legal. Any suggestion?

Thanks,
George

Thanks for info! How do you like Comptech header? I am considering to buy one pretty soon. Do you think I should go for it?

not if you plan to lawaway it. that just seems kinda silly when you can just save up a few months and get it.

If your in no rush my opinion would be wait for Skunk2. They are releasing an intake manifold in a few months I believe. I heard something about an exhaust manifold next. .. Could just be rumors tho .. only time will tell.

You got a good point! I can't able to pay full on header, that's why I decided to try put layway.

I was talking to my 'Acura Specialist' and according to him the Skunk2 intake manifold should run around $800 give or take 1 or 2 hundred $. The exhaust manifold [still according to my Acura Specialist] should run around the same $$ as the comptech. But the products are not in production yet so nothing is set in stone. I hope its more affordable than those numbers but only time will tell

Wow, we will see about the price on Skunk2 megapower header. I did called Skunk2 yesterday and asked them about the megapower header for K series. They said that they are working on it now and it should be ready to sell header by 30 to 60 days. Hopefully they will give us a good deal.

Yeah I remember that quote about your rattle header issue. I wonder how did it cause the rattle? I don't know if I can able to hear the rattle when I get the header because I am deaf guy. Maybe I can feel the rattle. I will see about it.

fyi, someone in the 'other' forum solved his rattle issue by getting a 90degree steel bar and mounted it between where the header/cat converter meet and the chassis. there was a bunch of bolts/washers/rubber pieces used, but the hardest thing about it was getting a hole drilled in the bar and just installing it probably.

he claims the rattle went away.

i dont know if u will be able to feel it, i just dont think the competech header is as heavy duty as the OEM piece. therefor the vibrations from the engine cause it to shake more.

that is my extremely basic theory.

There have been a couple of threads on the CT header rattle problem:

I dont' think a solution was ever reached.

The Skunk2 IM is overpricing if that's the price, and it's not going to do much on the TSX, simply there's no tuning avaliable, and might cause loss of power as well.

When I bought it, the Hondata reflash wasn't available; if I were to do it right now, I'd probably go for the reflash first. Of course if you can afford it, do both!

replaceing the intake manifold would still give you a postive gain, its simple better air flow. So any ideas on when this skunk 2 IM will be out??

Just get the DC header instead. It gives almost the same power, is cheaper, and doesn't rattle

I have been thinking about the Hondata reflash but it cost a little more money than the header. I wish I have money to pay both but it just take my time to buy it.

Yeah I have been thinking about getting DC header but the flex pipe issue with part 1. I don't know if DC header part 2 will give any problem with the flex pipe or not. But Comptech is better quality than DC but the rattle issue. I probably wait to see Skunk2 megapower header come out.

The Comptech piece is better made and continues to make power past 6600 rpms while the DC drops off. The Comptech header makes a few more ponies which is negligible so it really comes down to your preference

I think you are referring to the tests done by TOV. If you examine the results, both headers have the same curves, except the Comptech header was tested with the addition of Hondata reflash which gives a slight advantage.

Comptech headers are infinatly better than DC headers in terms of quality because Comptech are not mass produced like DC headers thats why they are a lot more expensive. Plus a company is in the process of buying out DC Sports [last i checked a month ago] and you can't order any DC stuff right now unless that process is over. All I know is Skunk2 is best of the best when it comes to stuff for this car so even if its a little more and a longer wait to get it, at least you know it's going to be a quality product.

I thought DC was purchased by AEM not too long ago, unless it's being sold again.

As far as Skunk2, I'm not sure about them being the best of the best if they can't even make a TSX with a K-Pro, their own header, intake, exhaust to have more hp than a stock TSX with an intake.

Good finding on Skunk2, so we can see how affect the Skunk2 performance for TSX and compared to other brand a like Comptech, DC Sports, etc.

You are correct, Dyno test for both headers seems have the same curves. So let me ask you, which header do you recommend for TSX? I know japan headers are very expensive and different design.

personally, i don't want to deal with the potential problems of the DC header even though they claim they've fixed the issue. that, and some of the vendors online say the customer support sucks.

but as an AT owner, i also don't want to deal with the rattle from the comptech, even though that'd be my personal choice between the 2. it's disheartening to know that the rattle happens for all AT owners, and even some MT's.

I don't think we will see much difference in gains when comparing different headers until the output of the engine is drastically increased. Therefore, the reliability factor is probably more important when choose a header. There are headers out there with more than one flex pipe which may help reduce the rattle or flex pipe breaking issue. You just have to pay to play.

To those wary of the DC header... I got a Topspeed (DC copy in stainless steel) header and had a better flexpipe welded in. Sounds great, no whistle, no breaking problems, and nice gains to the powerband. Total cost to me was around $320. I'm happy with my solution.

The dyno chart shows great gains above 6000rpm over the stock TSX, eventhough the peak power is very similar because of the torque tapering off at high RPM due to filling issues. They need a mini supercharger.
