Goodridge Banjo Bolts Junk

I recently installed Goodridge stainless braided brake lines on my '04 TSX and, while I love the lines and the firmer pedal feel, I have to say that the banjo bolts they supplied with their kit are crap. When tightening one (and not having even reached the final torque yet using a torque wrench), the bolt head snapped off! It sheared where the lateral hole is drilled (see photos).

Fortunately, the oem bolts work just fine and are much heavier-duty, so I used the old bolt. I went back to the two calipers I'd already finished, took off the Goodridge bolts (the heads didn't snap off but I'm not leaving potentially shitty bolts on my brake system), and put the original bolts in their place. No problems at all with the oem bolts in 4,000 miles.

Just an FYI to anyone installing Goodridge lines, your best bet is to re-use the oem bolts or, if you must have new bolts, get new oem ones before your install.

Man, you'd expect more from a "performace brake upgrade"

If I ever go the stainless line route, I'm goin OEM.

Had the same exact problem. Reused the OEM bolts also. No problems and brakes are great.

Peter, did you call up Goodridge and let them know? I'm also wondering if our torque values are beyond their spec. Could've just been a bad bolt in the lot (poor casting). Either way, I'll keep a look out on mine (30k miles on my so far and no problems).

I emailed Tire Rack and they refunded me $27 (25%) and let their brake dept. know about the problem. My guess is that it was a bad bolt, but when I was torquing the other Goodridge bolts down, none of them felt good. They all felt like I was stripping the threads on the caliper. Partly that's crushing the washers, but I've tightened a lot of bolts and these didn't feel right.

I'm not much of a he-man, but the problem might have been that I put my weight into it... Ha ha.

Update

I received an email from Goodridge tech support, the torque spec for the Goodridge banjo bolts is 14-18 lbs. That's lower than the o.e. spec (I don't remember what that is exactly, I think 28 lbs or something like that). I don't remember the lower torque spec being in the Goodridge instructions, but it may well be there and I missed it.

Either way, wanted to let everyone know it's lower than o.e. (which would be listed in the Helm's manual).
