Floppy Shocks!
Floppy Shocks!
Hey guys, I understand there will and is alot of interest in slamming (your oilpan into the asphalt).
But I would like to impliment the handeling that the designers of the TSX had in mind, and thus replace those totally garbago OEM flops (shocks).
In Europe I was blessed to have an Audi A3 in Austria and replaced the shocks with Monroe "top of their line" shocks and Voilla the Handeling was totally incredible. The TSX is currently a hazard on the road with such floppy shocks!
Is there like some simple Monroe shocks I can drop into this car to get the handeling that the designers had in mind?
P.S. I am really totally not interested in some thousand dollar shocks, nor was acura thats when they spent 10 dollars on them at the factory....
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Dude, please say no to crack!
OEM TSX shock floppy, Bwahahaha
And Monroe shocks, you gotta be kidding me! They'll last not even the ¼ of what the OEM shocks will last.

Jason, it appears that you have not properly constructed or applied your AFDB. Please do so immediately and be sure to check back with us once you are no longer under the influence of psychotronic mind control.

May I ask why you said that? The only thing that I can think of that would make you say that is you're a maniac on the road, endangering other drivers and pedestrians on the road.
And Monroe???

Thanks for taking the time to write us all here at Acura-TSX.com. After careful consideration by many of my fellow TSX owners we think we have a cost effect solution to your suspension isues. A company called Plymouth has manufactured what could be the future of automotive suspension and could very well be what Honda engineers had in mind when they drew the first TSX concept designs...

If he was a troll, why go after the shocks ?
Do like all the other trolls do and slam the car for being a FWD 4 cylinder which just happens to be an incredible value. I don't think he's a troll.

He is implying that the shocks (in other words the handling) in the TSX is so cheap and so below par that they shoudl be replaced by crappy monroe shocks. This absurd idea cant be for real. The whole idea, plus the fact that it was his first post sent my troll radar alarm off. I could be wrong...but it looks like he is just looking to get us worked up..and here I am responding to his post

I am really suprised how much attention this off the cuff post I made is getting...
1. My post was 100% serious. I have a TSX and with it comes my own observations based on the limits of my experience.
2. If I could afford a better car with the same features I would not have an Acura, I accept the TSX's shortcommings. I dont think just puting in lower springs will change the resistance of the Shocks. And so far After market TSX options I found only have Springs I have yet to see even 1000 dollar shocks btw.
3. I shared a previous experience, and yes I was not expecting much from Monroe shocks in my Audi A3 BUT the difference was very suprising.
4. I notice that in very sharp turns the car's shocks are not providing enough resistance and thus I called it Floppy.
5. I really dont care if you are a talented flamer from wherever, your still a flamer if thats what your here to do is flame people's posts.
for what its worth

Dude, it is of course your opinion. However I disagree with your opinion 200%. The TSX shocks are not floppy in the least, and when someone makes that statement, it seems that they are either a troll, or have done ZERO research.
since you say that you own the car, I dont know what to say to you.
Go drive a lincoln town car and tell me about those shocks...
I'm done.

yeah i dont think the TSX shocks are floppy...i've driven a lot of rental cars (taurus, altima, sonata, century, etc) and the tsx is by far the "non-floppiest" shocks out of the bunch. of course they could be stiffer but that wouldnt be practical to all the other non-performance TSX owners out there
Jason,
You get what you pay for...in order to 'improve' the current shocks, you will have to drop some big$$$ on coil overs or just wait until the aftermarket starts to design stuff for the TSX.
(KYB AGX??)
Actually, consider yourself lucky with your double wishbone set up. It should not take any time at all to develop new shocks compared to my RSX which has the Mc phearson strut set up.
Hardly anyone has released new struts for it...only coil overs seem to be available. I am considering the newly released Mugen set up or maybe even the factory performance struts available through acura- if they will part out FP kit, that is.
Bottom line..be patient for the good stuff to come out. The TSX is brand spankin new.
Here are some good companies you can contact.....
Tockiko (sp?)
Koni
Bilstein
Mugen
Tien (Coil overs)

You are right about the springs and shocks(dampers) they are indeed different things though working as a unit. If one puts in stiffer, lowered springs you will need uprated dampers with higher rebound settings. FYI a set of four Konis should be below US$1000.
3. I shared a previous experience, and yes I was not expecting much from Monroe shocks in my Audi A3 BUT the difference was very suprising.
Geez your A3 dampers must have been really clapped out for Monroes to be better. Sure any new dampers will be better than worn out ones.
4. I notice that in very sharp turns the car's shocks are not providing enough resistance and thus I called it Floppy.
Do you mean body roll? Sure the TSX is designed to have a bit more roll but if your TSX is flopping about in turns, your dampers could well be duff. However I doubt that knowing Honda's penchant for getting it right.
For the dampers to provide more initial resistance to roll, enhancing turn-in response, the dampers must have higher compression damping. If I am not mistaken, the TSX has more rebound damping than compression but is in no way floppy.
The suspension sits pretty high so as to provide more suspension travel to soak up bumps over a longer suspension stroke without resorting to high spring and damper rates to compensate for a short suspension stroke. This feature has been of greatest concern for the car's esthetics though IMO has not spoilt the handling balance.
Lowering it increases stability but changes the balance toward understeer and needs a thicker rear sway bar. Those primarily concerned with the looks will not go the distance to get handling items like the rear sway bar. They may not even bother with a new set of uprated dampers.
To get the TSX lowered and yet have the characteristics of stock is a tough task and IMO none have the perfect solution yet. But its getting there.

Jasonrdec, you said yourself that yourself that this is an opinion based on your limited experience. Your experience is obviously quite limited.
The TSX in no way is "floppy" as you describe it. There is body roll, but what OEM car doesn't have this problem? The initial roll you feel is not due to the shocks, but rather due to the springs being designed to be a compromise between comfort and sport.
And honestly, it sounds to me like the best "mod" you can make right now is to take a couple of good driving courses. They will teach you how best to handle your car before you spend money on modifications that won't really show much improvement without a change to your driving style. If you think the TSX is "floppy", then you must be sawing the steering wheel, because I can run slaloms with the TSX and the transition is nice and smooth. No rocking motion at all.
