Fidanza - Officially making a lightweight flywheel (PICS pg 4)

Well, I just got my confirmation email from Shawn at Fidanza, I will be sending off a brand new flywheel to them so they can make us a specific flywheel for our TSX. Current Timeline is as follows:

1. moda_way sends new flywheel to Fidanza - April 9 - 13
2. Fidanza creates the program for manufacturing - April 16 - 20
3. Fidanza puts the flywheel into production - April 23 - May 25
4. moda_way receives 1st production model - June 1

(all dates are estimates and contingent on every variable known to man)

IMPORTANT NOTE: I will not be posting pricing nor promoting any sale of this product. I'm hoping one of our incredible vendors on here will want to be a distributor/seller. If one of you wants to do this, I can give you my Fidanza direct contact.

I also asked about the clutch disc and pressure plate. They are probably going to do that as well. No word on that just yet.

Ryan, could you verify if the lightwheel flywheel is crank centric for mounting like OEM?

Good point, but silly question time - why wouldn't it be? (Especially as they're getting one to "copy" from)

I will definitely send that question to them. Let me know if you have anything else you want to ask. I know it will be constructed in the same fashion as all their other products.

What is their target weight on the flywheel?

Copying from a stock flywheel will provide them info on size, bolt patten, ring gear numbers and such. Different company may use different process to lighten the flywheel. If the crank mounting area is removed as part of the process to reduce weight, the end result is like fitting an aftermarket wheel without the hubcentric ring. The mounting bolts will hold the flywheel in place but it may not be properly positioned over the crank and causes vibrations.

Here is the crank centric area that I'm talking about. Note the recessed area to fit over the crank for proper positioning. I've seen aftermarket flywheel without that area. It's simply flat.

^^Since they haven't received my flywheel yet (I haven't even gotten my new one yet for that matter), I'll work this crank centric area into the design (if I can) stating that we'll sacrifice a bit of the weight in order to have proper fitment. We'll see if it gets anywhere with them b/c I looked at their site and I don't see any of their other pictures having that area.

An update from Shawn at Fidanza,

I saw your post on the forums and it reminded me to answer this question Yes it will be crank centric!!! Our basic rule of thumb, except some models is that we design to oem spec when it comes to aspects like crank centric recesses and any other clearance spots the factory has obviously milled or made obvious to not change This will be a great piece you need not to worry, only enjoy.

This guy is very prompt and answers any questions I have. No doubt, worthy of our business.

Based on their website and a few assumptions:
6061 T6 aluminum flywheel
1045 steel friction surface
1050 steel ring gear

Could you weight it and perhaps take some pics for before/after comparison?

I have both already. In the box, 20.5lbs, so it stands to reason the 8.255kg is correct per the online catalog given a minor error of the scale used. As soon as I get my son to bed, I'll get the pics up.

UPDATE ON WEIGHT: Using the FedEx scale, the box, bag and flywheel weighed in at 19.15 lbs. So I'm convinced, the weight on the online parts catalog is spot on.

EDIT: Pics of the OEM Flywheel

I've contacted the Fidanza contact and filled out a dealer app with them to go direct with them. We played some phone tag today so I will have to call him again tomorrow.

Awesome. Thanks for the update. Really glad you're signing up. I think this mod will be a good one since I know a few of us are coming up on a clutch change.

OEM is 18.15 lbs. Don't know the weight of the Fidanza yet, but my guess is it will be >10 lbs. That is just a guess.

And deceleration.

If you need help burning a clutch, take 30 mins and do as many 0-60 mph as possible.

Any word on if you will need to balance this flywheel with the clutch pressure plate - OEM or not?

Was checking their FAQ link and such looking for part numbers etc. on my Accord flywheel and 2.1 clutch kit to verify all the items from my recent order belong together.

Their FAQ recommends balancing the flywheel and clutch pressure plate at a machine shop that does this kind of work.

I knew a place back in Ohio that did this for me when I built 350-SBC but I have no flipping clue who to visit for this in Chicagoland.

I'll get you some picks of my Accord F23 kit later Moda, I figure the K24 kit should look similiar?

Else, I'll give them a call later...
