DIY Short Ram?

I found this neat article about a person that made their own SR intake by just buying the cone filter and putting it on the stock intake tube. I was wondering if anyone has seen this done or has done this themselves? I am not sure if the stock intake tube is strong enough to hold the filter upright and prevent it from sagging down though..

Here's the person's page

I think that's feuss2's page if I'm not mistaken.

With my previous cars, I went from homemade intakes to AEM or Comptech in the end. With the TSX, I skipped the homemade stuff and went for Comptech: fit, finish, quiet operation, and in Cali, smog legality.

I'm hesitant to go with cold air because I am from Canada and we get some nasty winters here. I am not sure I should shell out ~$300 just for a short ram if I can get pretty much the same effect from this DIY method

Did you have any mechanical issues with the DIY setup? Did the filter hold on properly?

Go for it. I had no problems in my other cars doing something like this.

The filter should hold on; if you need more peace of mind, try using clamp around the end of the k&N and tighten accordingly.

Well the reality is even if you bought a 200 dollar aem or injen intake it would not negate much more than 4whp. I think it will work just fine.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll be doing this soon enough and i'll report back.
Methodx; that's why I don't feel like shelling out close to 300 (in Canada) for this mod

anybody know the k&n part number for this particular cone?

referring to http://www.knfilters.com/search/univcone.aspx, there are a number of 3.5" inside diameter round tapered cones.

what's the max cone length allowed?

I guess if you are really being overly analytical about power, I'd compare torque curves as opposed to horses.

For those doing a DIY intake, you should also look into chuson upgrade thread. He utilizes an airhorn/velocity stack with a generic cone filter. I like this concept as well, as it make the intake a bit more efficient without costing too much.

Edit: Chuson's thread. Scroll down on his first post, and you'll see the velocity stack. https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41326

FWIW, the "snorkel" for the comptech Icebox has an airhorn at the end of it. I've also read how something like this helps. Good luck

Damn, can't edit from cellular. The ex intake is 3.5" id, with the thickness of the rubber @ the end of the intake....this adds up to 4" id for the intake required. I used the KN RU2520 over the ex intake with a bent bracket. Will post pics 2morrow of the setup.

Please post pics if you have a DIY setup and share the filter part number that you've used! Thanks a bunch

Here's a shot of mine. I took out the resonator long before this. It sounds GREAT from the drivers seat. But after letting a buddy drive, and hit v-tec, from the passenger side it sound kind of ...raspy? I don't know why it sounds good from one side and not the other but I'm not going to change it now. From the outside, it does sound awesome when he did a drive by with me standing on the side of the street. Performance wise, well it gave me something to do on a Sunday afternoon. I may get bored and make a heat shield for it, but the for under $60.00, was worth it.

I'm tempted to try this. How difficult is the actual install? If it is not too bad, I might make it my next project.

Yikes.....should have resampled above

Then eventually did this

Polishing stuff and ss 3.5" mandrel bent exhaust pipe

Got sidetracked a bit

Installed

Velocity stack

Install

The stack connects to the fender with a 4" flexible tube...will eventually replace this with a 3.5" mild steel mandrel bent pipe, but will move this in front of radiator (more direct air)

Then I need to enclose the SRI....found a nice bendable material made of aluminium....I might give the mirror finish a go

If anyone's wondering about the brakelight...this is what I will be doing (got the idea from the DIY halo.

Got a perspex rod of 15mm dia, from a friend....will drill both sides for LED insertion

With my 2 leds of 22000mcd each on both sides = 44000mcd….only concern I have is that mine (Perspex) is round and is larger in dia compared to the hex shape rod, wonder if it will reflect the light properly…..can always add another 2 more as the led is 5mmdia and the tube is 15mmdia that's a massive 88000mcd ….leds in green, Perspex in solid hatch colour in pic below

Can you start another thread with some details on your brake light mod?

hmmm, that looks like a little too much custom fabrication work for me.

i was expecting the following process:

(1) remove the stock resonator and airbox.
(2) insert k&n filter cone
(3) tighten cone with clamp.

Did all of the above on my 1st attempt....the cone was heavy and the sag noticeable....imagine driving while this thing is bobbing up and down (recipe for disaster)....the only fabrication was the bracket which I bent from a flat bar from my local DIY ship on a vice (used hammer to bend angles)....the holes were pre-drilled holes.

I dunno guys I don't think that "DIY" intake looks good at all. It It looks like u just went to the local Auto Zone and bought a $9.99 cone filter and shoved it in the intake tube, But thats just me. I like the LED 3rd brake light idea but it wouldn't work if u have a spoiler (2 many lights just look bad). All and all I'll have 2 give this mod a

Cellphone reply: This was temporary for as I couldn't wait to start modding. As I live inland, the temporary mod proved useful at altitude albeit uncomfortably loud above 3500rpm...more sound than motion. A trip down to the coast with this mod proved me right...sounded awesome o takeoff and the 1st 40km/h, but therafter, the engine starts screaming for more air that is not there...I drove back home with stock box...btw check my new 88000mcd page brakelight idea...planning on the E46 lip spoiler.

For a temp intake 2 c if u would rather have a short ram intake it's a pretty good idea. But as far as leaving it on permanently then no. Yea if u don't have a spoiler then the led lights would look good.

I was equally swayed into making the extension piece between the intake and the 4" cone, much like the J's Racing SRI....it connects into the ex intake and gets larger on the bend towards the filter.....As I have never fibreglassed before, I was worried if I would muck this up....which is why I opted for the safer route of the ss mandrel bent pipe.

The reason I enjoyed the J's idea,
  • was that it provided an additional volume of air between cone and engine as opposed to any SRI of similiar overall length...hope I said that right
  • If the CT Icebox and others of this type have additional air volumes 'behind' the filter, then J's was going the right route IMHO.
I have spoken to a very knowledgable friend, and he says that fabrication of the fibreglass piece should be very easy to do....and strong...According to him, this is what has to be done (if anyone's interested)....I haven't checked into this yet, so forgive/correct me if necessary
  1. Buy some A&B Foam
  2. Foam up a plastic bag to create a shape to work from
  3. Sand / file down to shape required
  4. Fibreglass the plug....said there is a tape type fibreglass that will be easier to shape around mould/plug
  5. He said 2mm overall thickness would be strong enuff

Hey I just had a quick question iv been running this setup for a while now but I was wondering what kind of pipe you used to extend the cone filter from the stock hose?

This is gonna upset the applecart. Had my car dynoed Mon past. As is, registered 164.5kw ATFW....after performance header and exhaust was 148.7kw...WTF. This was an inland dyno....Exhaust guy wants to redevelop his header and exhaust to suit my car....will post his proof on Monday when I get back from leave....also peaked @ 274nm @4702rpm....SRI is my ONLY mod :-)

I'd def get a 2nd opinion from another dyno before the redevelopment takes place
