Add power without increasing insurance?
Add power without increasing insurance?
Hey! I'm new to this community. I'm 16 years old and I was lucky enough to have an awesome dad who got me a TSX. It's an 05 AT. I want to increase the power of my car, but he is rightfully concerned that my insurance would sky rocket. Is there any way to increase my hp without increasing my insurance? Thanks.
Well... i mean... if you got Hondata reflash... i dont think it will increase the HP i think it will just decrease the RPMS that you get the HP at. I could be wrong.
On another note... the insurance company wont know you got these mods. So how would they increase your rates?
Just stay out of trouble when driving it and you'll be fine.

So insurance cost should not be a factor in what performance mods you make.
btw you are right: your dad is awesome. I think I got a BB gun when I was 16 from dad. oh wait -- it was a pellet gun.

Sure, max momentary HP gain is 29HP, and peak is only a few HP, but overall, the area under the HP and TQ curves is MUCH greater.

Most insurance policy cover "CPE" up to a certain amount with no additional prem increase. You need to read you policy or call your agent to determine what that amount is. If it is not enough to cover the mods you make then you will need to purchase additional CPE. This only effects the COMP and COLL portion of your prem and is usually fairly inexpensive, regardless of age.
CPE = custom parts and equipment
CPE = custom parts and equipment
If you just get the reflash, theres no reason to report that to your insurance. If you total the car, big deal, your out $600. You would probably be able to pull out the ECU and immobilizer anyway...

If you pull any parts it would reduce the salvage value of the vehicle and the insurance company will likely deduct the cost of the parts from your settlement.

This is what allstate told me, "there is not a finite dollar amount limit to custom parts and equipment under our standard auto policy"
"If you have custom parts on your vehicle and the vehicle is involved in a loss we will market search your car, looking for others with similar modifications and base the value on those vehicles"
They went on to say that if you had added say $7000 in CPE, that would not be covered - you would need to have a classic car policy and bascially state and pay prem on what you declare your veh to be worth. But they said maybe 500-1500, might be - bu would not committ to a dollar amount.
Given this info I wouldn't make any extensive mods under an allstate policy - they are to ambigious (sp?) as to how much they will cover.
Another problem with them market searching values is that what a mod is worth to you or members of this forum is not neccessarily what it would be worth to the general public, if it actually adds value at all.
