Network engineer making about $65k/year. I think another thing to think about is if people traded in a car with equity on it. For example, when I bought my TSX, I traded in my Accord and gained $8000 in equity which I put down, bringing my OTD total to just under $21k.

I am a computer programmer - specialized web programming.
27 years old, I make about $80K/year but have a house in Southern California... expensive as hell.
I bought my TSX 2 years old with 20,000 miles for $20500, $4,500 under sticker. Just held out for two weeks and the dealer was calling me every day.
This is my first 'new' car as I have had a 92 honda accord, a 88 VW Fox and an 88 Civic.

Income & job
I work for a Public Utility & make $63,000.00 a year, my wife is a Commercial Underwriter & makes around $50,000.00 a year. The Utility job is my day job so I can afford to minister to God's children evenings & weekends for free.

My wife and I both work for the Federal Gov in New Mexico as GS-13 (IT specialist and Fed Probation officer). The average family in N.M. makes about $45,000 per year. We make $155,000 before taxes (a lot less after taxes). We live on one income and save for retirement and pay off bills ASAP (just purchased a house at the same time as TSX).

I started with the government in 2003 as a high GS-7 after I graduated from the College of Mechanical Engineering at UF. I quickly advanced through the government's intern program and am now a 12. I plan on being a 13 within five years. I'm currently having my Master's Degree paid for by the government (Master's in Logistics Management).
I make well above the $51K mark.
There are a LOT of enginerds on this board. LOL.
Wife is active duty Naval nurse making roughly $65K/yr after housing/food/whatever allowances.

I had two internships with GE Aircraft Engines, so I had experience too. I think that's what got me hired with the government in 2003.
UF's social life was out of this world!

I haven't seen the rankings in a while but i know we were up there somewhere. I was in a fraternity so i got to see the best social life possible that was there however, we are right next to UPenn, so when you wanted a "real" party you just walk a few blocks!
Well good luck with getting up to 13!

I am in the mid $30k's as a fund accountant. I used to make a bunch more but took a pay cut for less hours/ stress which allows me to attend law school.

I was working as a System Analyst for a University hospital in ABQ. I like the job and benefits (free education) but the pay really sucked $44,000 base with another $4,000 with overtime.
I’m new to federal service, only 3 months in (5 years active duty as an Army Officer in the 90s). They built a new Federal building under the Department of the Interior and under the National Business Center (NBC). They finished both buildings about 6 months ago. We provide a classroom/computer training facility for Indian pueblo/tribes/villages for the entire USA. They hired me and one other person as two non-supervisory GS-13 and we just manage the computer labs, 6 servers, and 2 web sites. There was a +$25,000 raise for me just by taking this job.

300k in 6 years= easily afford a 30k car over 6 years.
Lets say you are making 50k a year
so that's aprox $3000 cash (after taxes, 401k or whatever)
$600 - car payment
$150 - full coverage car insurance
$150 - gas
$1200 - rent
$150 - utilities
$400 - food
= $2500
$350 left for whatever
Not much room for savings...

If there's one thing I learned in college, it's that rankings don't mean anything. I went to Cal Berkeley for mechanical engineering where their engineering program is ranked 2nd under MIT and tied w/ Stanford. I didn't learn jack and I don't remember jack, it was all theoretical and I had to find my own damn internships.

To try to put it back on track, I'm finishing my Master's degree in Engineering and have signed a contract for $65K plus $12-15K (approx) bonuses. New graduate and this is my first new car. Was looking at the 3 series but this is the smart choice hands down.

Job and compensation
I am a pediatric gastroenterologist making annually somewhere between 100K and 200K, although I hasten to add I was making a trainee's salary (30-36K) for 6 years after medical school and less than 100K until 2001. My goal since I was a resident was a 6-cylinder BMW 3-series (even M3), but when I finally felt ready to buy this year, pragmatic value-for-money instincts (age-related perhaps?) intervened and I went for the TSX NAVI this August. I have had no regrets at all, the TSX is a wonderful balance of enthusiast's handling and luxury appointments.

cost of living in AZ must be nice! i'm impressed that you got those two sweet cars on 85k/yr plus a house and regular expenses. Congrats!
Well i responded, seems like there should be more categories. I make 65ish/yr and my fiance makes 100ish/yr. we're both 25. the TSX is our only car right now, as I don't need one for work.

No, it's not like that. No law school debt, and I have been practicing for 12 years, but made no $$$ (and drove an Acura Integra the entire time) until last year when I moved to a different firm. Before that, I was a free lance copyeditor for 10 years and made a few $ (and drove a new Honda Civic). Before that I was a biological research scientist and completely broke (hence the brakeless Civic).
Now I can actually afford to buy this fancy car!
