I'm a trademark attorney and make almost $100K/year. I admit I wonder how all you 21-year-olds afford such a vehicle. I mean, this could be your entire year's salary for a car! I couldn't afford to buy a car until I was 30 years old, and then I bought a 10-year-old 1975 Honda Civic with no brakes for $500 (and sold it the next year for the same price, but still no brakes).

Well im not 21 but im in my 20s.. and I make around 45K and my gf makes 40K so we spilt all of our payments. She pays for the house and other bills and i pay for food, tv's, and other stuff and thats how i can afford the TSX and she has an IS250.

Hahah...isn't it sucks how people are superficial now and this days? Does it matter what kind of car you drive and how much income you make? To me, car gets me from point A to point B.... as long as you are safe, it is all good. By the way, I am a dentist, and TSX is my only car...for now.

making less then $50k and buying $30k car is not a wise financial decision, unless you got it as a present, IMHO

I'm only 19...I make around 35,000 a year. But I don't really have any other bills to pay for, so 480 a month for a car payment really doesn't hurt me.

A 30k car you pay over 5-6 years, so you would have earned 250-300k in the 5 years, so you statement doesnt really have any weight to it.

300k in 6 years= easily afford a 30k car over 6 years.

haha that car costs you 30k assuming you pay for it all at once. If you are paying over 5-6 years then you have to factor in that little thing called interest and it adds up quickly. I agree that you should not drive a 30k car when you are only making 50 a year. At the very least you should make double the price of your car.

I am a senior biostatistician for a major cancer center in LA county. Won't say how much I make exactly, but when I bought the TSX, my wife and I made ALOT less. Funny thing is, I don't think I need more car, even though we can now easily afford it.

To the OP: I would divide the 51k+ bracket up. That group encompasses more than the others combined.

I make under 30k and I bought this car and pay for school but i live at home with the parents ><. In nyc its not the price of the car that kills you, its the insurance and parking.

I work in executive search, taking the job just out of college after I graduated in May.

I think the viewpoint of making twice your car's total worth is not valid in all circumstances. Not all of us are paying for many other expenses, like a house, DEBT, etc. I intend to live at home until I get married (which isn't too far in the future,) so that is a big cost savings itself and allows me to purchase said car and a house when I tie the knot.
