Question Would you slow down?

This is not so much TSX related as it is ethics related (sorta). Here's the deal. I've gotten numerous complaints from my neighbors about me driving too fast through the neighborhood (only two but that's more than enough for me). The first time I believed it to be a valid point as I used to go above posted speed limit, so I complied. I just got approached today but by a different neighbor about the same thing however there are a few things different this time around. 1: I stay at or below the speed limit (30). Admittedly I have gone over a few times but those instances would be around 4:00 am or so. 2: When I see the kiddies at play, as a courtesy I will drive slower as to give their parents peace of mind. Today there were no kids on the street or anything but my lovely neighbor still insists I drive slower in case there are children I don't see etc. Because of my passive nature I was quick to appease him with a yes to his request. Now that I have had time to think on it would I be within my rights to continue as I were? Would you too succumb to the wishes of your neighbor for the sake of conflict avoidance?

i'd say just go into slow it down mode. honestly, you never know where the kids are or other cars coming at you, people opening doors to their cars.

personally, if i know that an area is frequently by kids or the streets are narrow (not an uncommon thing where i live), i just slow it down a little (25 mph). i've had neighbors flying down our street to the intersection as i have made the turn onto the street. they happen to be in the middle of the street rather than their side. it's an accident waiting to happen. i'll even slow down in areas i know that there are pedestrians.

i can understand if you're going over 30 and it's 4am. it's another thing during the middle of the day, b/c you never know. the other thing, if you upset a neighbor enough they may call the cops on you. i'd say use common sense and you'll be fine.

Speaking from experience; its just not a good idea to go over 30mph in a residential area regardless of time.
there's just no need.

heed the neighbors warnings!

Even if your speeding or not, its best to just keep the neighbors happy. I always cost into my neighborhood nice and slow with the music low.

I guess I'll just granny it then. My only gripe was that if they did happen to call the cops like trigirl said what would he book me for, Going AT speed limit? I spend most of my time at 28ish in the daytime with no one around, so this is more of a being at peace with one another type deal. Also I do have a ct icebox, dc header, and high flow cat. I don't think my car is much or any louder than stock until I hit rpms I'll never see in my subdivision. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a victim of overreaction.

There is when you have work half an hour away and find it already takes you half an hour to "wake up" lol

the way you presented it in the Original Post makes it seem like you're in the wrong.

they are your neighbors, and chances are you are going to be living next to them for pretty much a long time.

dont get into a long standing feud over something so silly.

the streets in my neighborhood are narrow without curbs or sidewalks. There also lots of children that like to ride bikes, play basketball, etc. Lots of walkers, including me and my friends. The speed limit is 25 but there are those who do not care and speed. It is not worth it, if god forbid, you hit someone. At 4am you have to contend with wildlife crossing the roads. We have fox, deer, bobcat, and feral cats. My suggestion if you want to go faster drive go for a ride on a highway. Please slow down in your neighborhood. You do not want to have to live among pissed off neighbors.

Have kids... your idea of what's fast in a neighborhood changes once your little one starts playing in the yard. It's really not worth getting into it with your neighbors even if you are technically in the right driving at or below the speed limit. A cop can still ticket you for driving at an unsafe speed/reckless driving based on the prevailing conditions (ie. kids in the neighborhood).

The irony of your name is pretty funny lol. But thank you all for the answers. I feel a lot better about the outcome now. However, I have to put this out there in regards to the 4am wildlife. This car is amazingly agile; not a single traction was lost that morning.

If you are doing the speed limit in the neighborhood, then they have nothing to complain about. Plus, you seem like you have complied even though you weren't really doing anything wrong besides maybe speeding slightly.

I'd say keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like your neighbors have nothing better to do than pick on someone with a modified car. I guess people assume since you fix up your car you're going to haul ass everywhere you go, because why else do we fix up our cars?

Your neighbors would have a field day in my neighborhood. At least 3 people come in and out of our court at 30-40+ mph where the speed limit should be around 15mph although there isn't a sign.

Continue to keep it slow in the neighborhoods. Don't want a nasty incident on residential roads with KIDS playing.

Stay classy AZine'ers!

I live in a rural area and would get this all the time in my STi as would my son in his MR2. It has never happened to me or any one driving our Jeep or now in my TL. For these, i would getbthe friendly wave. Of course, I slow down and move over whenever there were people, dogs, horses or whatever on the road. In the STi, I would just down shift when I saw the people that thought I was going "to fast".

When in Rome ...

... do as the Romans do.

I would drive as fast or slow as my neighbors, especially in the residential area.

There's a road by me marked 30 mph. When I was new to the neighborhood, a cop car tailed me. I was doing 30, so why?

Now I know he wanted to "push" me to 40 mph, the speed everyone else was doing.

Coming into my neighborhood not too long ago, I payed much closer attention to how my car sounds during its trip to 30. Now that I really took the time to observe it, I noticed a nice little growl going through first (shifting at around or a little higher than 3k), and as well a little through second. It's nothing I would consider even close to loud. However, I'm no stranger to vtec so maybe my perception of sound could be thrown off a bit while driving? Also totally unrelated to the topic, justnspace is there some back story to your many um... crab themed pics?

Ethically speaking, traveling at a safe and courteous speed is the right thing to do. If you are doing this and at the same time observing the law, then the neighbors have no valid complaint.

If it were neighbors that were further away and I don't interact with them, I'd blow them off. However, if you are likely to interact with them or they are very nearby, then I'd just make them happy so that my life will be easier when I see them.

It bothers me when parents over-react to drivers that are observing laws and common sense. I knew how to be safe around roads from the age of 5, and before that age a child should be accompanied by an adult. My opinion on this subject will not change when I have children.

I came across a livid parent at a park once that was shouting and threatening to pull me off my motorcycle when I was traveling 10mph on a 15mph road in first gear with no children around and a clear view of the road shoulder. My loud and high-revving bike must have sounded like I was racing, but the person just had an unrealistic view of reality. If they want to have high blood pressure over nothing, then I won't worry about it.

Older neighbours tend to think Loud = Fast.
Sitting at a high rev in 2nd (or even 1st) while going 20mph can make some people think you are going 45mph. Manual transmissions are not the norm, so people relate high revs to speed, since it takes speed in an automatic to get high revs.

Loud is ok :P
Save the speed for the highway.

My neighbourhood has cars parked on either side of the road and children play everywhere. A disaster waiting to happen. Driving 25mph feels WaY too fast.
