my windshield needs to be replaced. i had a small rockchip, which grew into a small crack. when i got in my car the other morning it had grew into a huge 's' shaped crack. i should've put some sort of filler in it while i had the chance.

anyone know how much $$ i should expect to pay to have the windshield replaced?

any alternatives to save $$ ? i was thinking about checking out junkyards for tsx's with undamaged windshields.. do the accords use the same windshield?

 

go through your insurance, you pay the deductible for comprehensive, mine was $200 when I got mine replaced do to a rock chip

 

y deductible is $500, but to replace your front window with labour should be at least 200-300, not counting the cost of work

 

So... that's the price without labour?

 

here in AZ mine was 200 with tax and labor

just had the same thing happen. 1/16 inch diameter chip about 1.5 inches from drivers a-piller right at eye level. the crack appeared overnight. the crack was 12-14 inches long-all at once. I might have been ripped on the $$ but ACURA windshield is $700 with moulding. labor is $200. takes about 1/2 day total. This is in BayArea CA.
I needed to get it replaced since I had a roadtrip planned 2 days later SF to portland. My deductible is $250. HTH. -ed

 

when you get a small small tiny chip.. you can save it! go to pep boys and get the windshield crack repair glue tube. It works! we tried it on my friends car. let it heal for about 30 minutes. The glue will go down into the crack and seal it and hold it. If the crack is tooo big, you're SOL.

 

in my case the chip and crack appeared together -unless I didn't notice the chip - which is completely possible since the chip was in that painted dotted area of the windshield mask.

 

I had mine replaced a few months back it was like 266 from Safetlite, not Acura glass, it was PPG. They did bend the rubber moulding and broke some clips so I complained and they ordered new OEM rubber moulding and new clips and replaced them all for free. They didn't even second guess replacing the moulding. I would recommend them.

I went through 3 windshields in my Civic, in just under 5 years! I found that my insurance would cover chip repair at no cost to me, and would cover the replacement for the cost of my comprehensive (not collision - be sure you are looking at the right deductible). In the case of the replacements, the cracks became too large to fix, so the key is to keep on the lookout for small chips, and repair them quickly. Temperature changes can make a small crack large almost instantly...I watched one "crawl" across when I turned my heat on one chilly winter morning!

...took me about 2 or 3 weeks to realize what AZ stood for (I don't see it that often, and www.acura-tsx.com is a mirror to the site)

 

Many automobile insurance policies are written with an endorsement that waives the deductible for glass claims. If you don't have it now, check with your agent/broker/company - if available, the cost is negligable - on my TSX it is $14.00 per year.

Also, many policies offer an endorsement for OEM replacement parts, including glass. The cost is usually just a few dollars.

BTW, I've got 32 years in the insurance business (yes, I'm an old fart), so feel free to post or PM any insurance related questions.

i was at a honda dealer the other day, investigating a small ding in my windshield. he said i could patch it, and live with a hazy substance over it. he said it's also not worth fixing, just wait til i got a bunch and replace the windshield.

he also said, not to go to a dealer for a new winshield because they will rape you.

said a new windshield for the 2006 TSX should be about 200 plus installation. go to a uto glass place

I'm due for another windshield change as well off the second windshield. No big cracks or dents, just that it's so peppered now the vision is losing quality. The wear had been accelerated last summer when I drove into a rain of shattered glass on the highway.

I recommend getting original Honda glass. On my old Accord, I had the front windshield replaced by one company and they used OEM-style glass. The wavy-ness of the glass was almost nauseating. I had the glass replaced by another company (the first company said that I received what my insurance paid for) and it was not as bad, but still crappy.

For my TSX, I opted for the original equipment replacement policy. When I had my windshield replaced last month, I took the car to the Acura dealer. They used Honda glass and it is excellent. My deductible was $200.00 and I think the original equipment policy was about $20.00.

 

Due to the heat... my small crack has spread half way through the windshield, right in my sight of view. Problem is, I'm in Arizona now and my car is still registered in Texas, so I have Texas registration stickers on the inside of the windshield. Thats going to be a bitch getting those replaced since I'm not going back to Texas until October.

 

OEM glass is very expensive; i had to replace my windshield 2 weeks ago (small chip turned into a huge crack due to heat) and got a quote from acura dealership for $600+
since my deductible is 500 it is not an option... i ended up calling local companies and finally replaced my windshield for $275 after tax (non OEM part of course)

 

For future reference, you can ususally buy OEM glass from a glass shop for a significantly lower cost than the dealer. Most glass shops will offer a NAGs discount (I believe that is for National Association of Glass dealers). The NAGS discount varies from 10 - 55 %, but will usually be far below the dealer cost.

I know of many anecdotel stories where dealers have had the glass store come to their shop with a remote repair truck, install an OEM part, and just add to the glass store invoice to add dealer profit - final cost was lower for the consumer and still profitable for the dealer.

 

In Florida, I think they make the insurance companies pay for windshield replacement for free (no deductable). I dunno the rule on chips, tho. This is to discourage people from driving around with cracked windshields, where it's more of a safety hazard.

 

i dont think the OEP is only $20, if thats what you paid then you got a good deal, and a good deal on the windshield at @200. but is that only if the windshield needs to be replaced? because that could get very touchy. i plan on replacing mine after 24-36 months, just from regular wear.

 

Actually, about $20 for an OEM endorsement is just about right. That's pretty much would it looks like when I endorse a client's policy. But you are correct, that will only cover a windshield that needs to be replaced - replacing it for cosmetic reasons is not covered under insurance.
