Will this work? Question re: Swapping Navi DVDs

I have an 04 TSX w/ the original Navi DVD. A friend of mine has an 04 TSX and just got the newest Navi DVD he ordered online.

I remember reading on here some time ago that if you load the new Navi DVD you'll get all the GUI changes and firmware update. Last Sat I loaded his Navi DVD into my car. I then put my Navi DVD back into the drive and I see the new GUI.

I start driving home and noticed ALL streets except for freeways and highways were "Unnamed Street". I ejected my Navi DVD, popped it back it. Same thing.
I found a thread on here that said to go to the diagnostic menu and play around w/ it. I did and saw the "Load Disc" option. I got the street names back, along w/ the old GUI (because the old Navi DVD is all I have)

I really like the new GUI and firmware of the new Navi DVD, but I cant justify spending $150+ on the a new Navi DVD when streets I normally drive on hasnt changed.

Here is my question:
I am seeing my buddy this Sat again. If this time, I load his Navi DVD, and load it again through the diagnostics screen, will all the street names show in my Navi as well as the new GUI?

Probably not. You need to have the new Navi disc in the player to get all the new benefits.

Well I did get most of the the new benefits (all GUI) from what I can tell, I just didnt have the street names which I dont understand because my Navi DVD has all the same streets, etc.

It is my understanding that once you put in a newer version NAV DVD and it does the firmware update you must use that disc from then on. If you want to go back to a previous version DVD I understand you have to take the car back to the dealer and they do some sort of reset.

I just got my orange disc 3.70 (2008) update yesterday for my 2004 TSX and installed it in fact. I will be selling my 3.60 (2007 update) NAV DVD on eBay soon.

There is one on eBay selling for $75 now, so I will probably set the starting amount around there. I will post a link to the auction (or PM you if that isn't allowed) with the auction link when I post it.

This might be a dumb question, but can you make a copy of these navi DVDs onto a DVD-R and just use that in the player? Are there unreadable sectors, or is there some kind of encryption on the files?

What's your impression of the 2008 disc so far?

I have an 06 and am sorely disappointed by the POI and map databases. So I would love to get an updated disc, if there really were improvements in those areas (which I highly doubt - if streets and places that have been in existence for 5 or 10 years are not in the 06 database, what are the chances they'd be in the 08 database??).

One thing I'm wondering is if we 04-08 owners will be able to keep updating our NAVI's any more beyond 08, since the new TSX is out, and our version of the NAV is gone (i.e. 09 TSX nav isn't touchscreen anymore, has traffic, etc)

They frown on piracy talk on these forums. That being said I did try to copy mine once to back it up (especially considering they cost $185). The discs are dual layer and I tried both a DVD+R DL and a DVD-R DL and neither worked on my 2004 TSX. Owners of newer TSX models claim to have been able to make copies of the disc. If you do a search this has been discussed before.

First keep in mind the NAV update DVD for the 04 and 05 TSX's is different than the 05-08 TSX's which have a newer NAV system. That being said, from the little I have played with the 2008 disc in the Columbus, Ohio area visually there is no difference (not that I was expecting one) but when you look up points of interest like restaurants, stores and things they definitely added some of the newer places around me that were built in the past few years. Of course how much is added depends entirely on your location and if it is a verified area or not.

As them stopping making NAV DVD's for the 04-08. As you can see on the order page they still are releasing updates for year 2000 Acura models so why would they stop with the 04-08 models? I expect they will continue to sell NAV update discs for years to come or until people stop buying them.

In any case your 2006 NAV system uses the WHITE update DVD's which are also used on the non-touch screen 2008 RDX, MDX and RL.

I just put it up on eBay here...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=290207637487

I set the starting price at $75. A recent auction for a 3.60 DVD went for $102.50.
