This was near the top of my "new" messages list for some reason. . . weird. I use the Amsoil stuff in my other car and like it. . .

If its not 5w-30 i'd hope they'd tell you since if you have to top off you're not supposed to mix different grade oils.

Mobil 1, 5w-30
nuff said. Change it every 5000, and your car will last 15 years+

I've used Mobil 1 in previous cars and in the trany also. Never had a problem in all types of weather conditions, etc. But don't use in high mileage cars or you will find oil leaks like you've never seen before - Highly detergent!

But now after break-in period in the TSX I've switched to Royal Purple instead. I'm always looking for that little edge that will help my cars run trouble free. Hit the website and read the history. These floks remind me of the story of why "they" don't make a light bulb that doesn't burn out. Hint: If your syn oil doesn't break down you could run it 10's of Kmiles and just change the filter. Not that I would do that but in theory you could. You can't sell much oil that way... BTW - I always use the best filters out there.

5w30 Mobil 1... I change it myself around every 5500 - 6500mi's, I've gone through 3 oil changes with it and up to 21000mi's with no problems. Started using it right after break in (~5500mi).

Only use 5w30 for the TSX... Even if the TL recommends 5w20, I would ONLY use 5w30 for it.
While 5w20 would give better fuel mileage (with the TL) it will not provide not even as much protection. Plus the K24A2 does ALOT more work than the J32A4, so it really needs 5w30.

I can not believe it is 5W-20, I was going to run 5W-30 Mobil 1, but they don't make it, 0W-20, wow that is thin, they do make. Any other synthetics have 5W-20?

I thought I saw on the TSX the same thing on the oil fill cap (5W-20)?

Also, I heard that you should not switch to synthetics until the car is well broken in (approx 10K miles or it does not break in properly), any ideas on this?

I've been using Catrol Syntec 5w-50 or 5w-30 for along time, I know others that have as well. Since some guy put 1-millions miles on a 5th gen Accord with the stuff it must be ok, even if it isn't a 100% pure synthetic oil, I still really like the stuff. And you get the stuff almost anywhere, I started buying it at Kmart.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ has all the info.. the special break additive is MOLYBDENUM.. check the forums there.. there are many oil that contains high moly, same or greator than the stock oil..

mobil 1 has pretty low molybdenum, which isn't good for breaking in.. and don't get moly disulfide, it'll clog your engine, you need soluble moly not solids

you can read all abou oil there..

Exclamation

I use NeoSynthetic or Mobil1.

The reason you don't want to use sythetics during break-in is because it doesn't allow your engine to break-in. Simple as that!

During break-in, the surface of your cams, pistons, cylinder walls etc have casting imperfections. The break-in process allows for "boring, honing, polishing" and what not to occur so there won't be any high/hot spots in the future.

An engine can be broken-in in as little as 7-800 miles, but I wouldn't suggest using sythetics 'till atleast your first, if not second, oil change. I've even heard not to use it 'till 30k miles, but I don't believe that ish...

Amsoil All the way, figure if I'm gonna spend more than 200% over dyno cost, a few extra bucks wont make a difference.

Amsoil 5-30 became 5-40 by 8k miles. At 12k miles the viscosity was
at big problem losing mpg.

I'm going to run some redline and will to an oil test, look for it in
about 4 months.

With the bearing clearances we have in modern engines this can be
a real problem for us, maybe not in a worn domestic motor, but i wouldn't
do this to a TSX.

These guys are rerunning the mobil 1 test now, they liked it in the
first test but it did show higher wear metals than the amsoil. Amsoil's own
literature claims significantly better wear results and that appears to be
validated.

I should clarify, i used Amsiol 5-30 rated at 25K miles and change it every 6 months with the filter. Probably about 5K miles tops inbetween intervals.
