TSX = Deer avoidance

Well ... on my way home from my mom's house ... just me ... about 10:30 at night. I am rolling down the country roads on the way out to my house watching for deer like a HAWK. I am even thinking to myself how lucky I am....

My luck ran out ... BUT

I see this deer come charging out and STOP in my lane (I am doing about 55-60). So instinct takes over .... I jam on the breaks and whip the CRAP out of the wheel to the left (no oncoming traffic of course ) and get as far as I can away w/o going off the road. Well in the mean time the deer decides he is confused and kinda goes left/right/left/right and as I am making my jump to the left he turns TOWARDS me.

Fortunately I had popped it left just enough that he kinda "scrubbed" down the right side of my car. I am thinking ... surely there is going to be a niiiiiice set of scratches and streaks down the right side of my car. I get back in the garage ... turn the overhead lights on full blast .... close my eyes as I walk around ... open then ... NOTHING! Dang was I so lucky ... or was it luck?

Lemme just tell you ... my TSX's handling capabilites/VSA/ABS kept me in COMPLETE CONTROL during this whole event. I think I got my speed down to 20-25 by the time the deer and my car touched, there was no skidding at all, no under or oversteer, and I was back in my own lane just as fast as I moved to to left side of the road. All I can say is my nerves were slightly shaken after the fact (mostly wondering about the damage and glad the thing didn't climb my hood and come through the windshield), but the TSX absolutely just gained a huge huge notch in my book.

So for those that think handling is important ... you're wrong .... it's HUGELY important when it comes to safety. This car is amazing.

P.S. My cat like reflexes and superior driving skill also came in handy

Good save and good to hear that you're ok, Prov. I don't have to dodge deer, but I've had to dodge a number of errant motorists and the TSXs handling has saved my ass a number of times. Plus, people bitching and whining about the brakes all the time, but when the time comes, they can save your ass.

That's awesome Prov. THIS IS WHY YOU DRIVE WITH VSA ON. That was not directed at Prov but at all those that feel they don't need the VSA. I'm glad everything turned out ok and I'm glad the twins weren't with you.

Deer whistles...uh...those don't work...

My buddy had a set of these on his old Volvo V70R and they got taken out by none other than a deer that he nearly hit. Luckily, both he and the deer reacted quickly and the damage to the car was minor while the deer managed to get away with little more than a headache (according to my friend). The deer whistle was taken out and was never to be seen again.

Absolutely ... disabling VSA should only be for a closed track situation. You absolutely never know when you need your car to react as safely as possible.

Here's another to agile cars

Good job provench.

You would have been eating Deer steak for dinner tonight if you had a CL

On a related note my uncle does'nt quite have the reflexes (or a TSX) and managed to ram a Deer on the way home from up north on Tuesday night. He will however, be eating Deer steak for dinner. Oh, and will have to pay a few K to get his Explorer fixed.

Had it in the back of the Explorer when he went by my parents house (At 11PM BTW to drop off Ricotta, you know what that is right? Thats what's funny, he hits a deer, puts in the truck and then still finds the time and energy to drop by my parents house at 11PM to bring the ricotta god forbid you don't deliver the ricotta)

Anyway I know its illegal, but he probly pictured a feast when he saw that thing, no way he was leaving it.

ricotta is the best when its fresh and still warm.

Thats funny that he packed up the deer. Obviously a hunter right? I know some guys who on the way back from hunting will shoot a deer out the window of their truck if they see one.

Thats why the delivery was so important

No, not a hunter, just a big eater.

I use to go hunting with an uncle when I was younger, he used to shoot partridge from the window of his Pathfinder. I was in the passenger seat. Noob Hunters

domn, who's see Deer on his way home to Bolton almost daily.

damn..you got lucky..next time just hit the deer. if you end up in a ditch or worse hit a tree or another car trying to avoid a deer you'd be in much worse sh!t than hitting a deer. Never try to avoid hitting an animal if you are traveling at high speeds.

but on a sidenote, it would've been much easier to avoid it in a Mazda6 or any 3series. :fingerfawk:

if you hit a deer or any animal, it goes against ur comprehensive claim in insurance meaning it's not your fault and your rates wont rise and most likely a lower deductable than if you tried to avoid it and end up in a ditch, hitting a tree or skidding off the road or hitting another car which would count as a collosion claim where you are at fault and your rates double.

wow, the tsx is really growing confidence on me, last article i read, i forgot who it was, he did a 90 degree turn exitting a freeway ramp at 50mph (if i remember correctly), now this. it is truly amazing what Honda can squeeze out of a FWD car and make it equally if not better to a RWD car.

C'mon Gilbo, I know you're brighter than this despite your " special" status. What you're suggesting is to run an extremely high risk of injuring yourself, possibly seriously, and maybe even die of it. At least, if you try avoiding it, you have more chances of getting out of it unscathed than if you just go and ram the poor thing! Plus, with the TSX (no matter what you'll say), you have really good chances of succeeding in an emergency sharp left-right-left! Provench is the living proof of this.

Hmm...from this I deduce that gilbo values his insurance rates more than his life. Hey, if that's the case, maybe we should add a few dozen more deer to the area where he lives

Egad man ... this was not a squirrel dude ... you ever seen what a deer can do when it goes through the windshield? I know the limits of my TSX and the car was under complete control the whole time. Re-read my post bro ...

Mazda6 abd 3 series ...

i would take my chances hitting a deer rather than wraping myself around a tree/pole or hitting another car or fliping into a ditch. hitting an animal, for instance a deer, the animal will absorb more of the impact and bounce off, while hitting something solid like a tree/pole means you absorb all the impact.

Uh...unless it happens to jump through your windshield!! This happens when you scare them. They leap and could easily go through your windshield and subsequently, through you. Why don't you give it a try sometime and tell us how you feel afterwards.

ugh as much as I'd hate to agree with gilbo I've read more post about people destroying their cars avoiding deer then I have hitting them. I've only heard of/seen one deer go through a window and that's the infamous dodge pictures.

swereved to avoid deer and destroyed cars
pictures dont work anymore but he backed it into a tree. The tree went through the car to the front seats. Had it hit front first he would've died

nearly wraps the car around a pole

hit the deer
again no pics but the cars fixed

this guys hit deer two different times. The driver and the car are both fine
