Well - here's the problem tony ... the fact that I performed a maneuver, missed the deer, and no damage was done to any car or person won't make headlines. And it all comes down to decision making ... if there was an oncoing car I would have done something completely different, but there wasn't so I used that to my advantage.

swereved to avoid deer and destroyed cars
pictures dont work anymore but he backed it into a tree. The tree went through the car to the front seats. Had it hit front first he would've died

nearly wraps the car around a pole

hit the deer
again no pics but the cars fixed

this guys hit deer two different times. The driver and the car are both fine
tony, lemme as you...what would your natural instinct be to a very large object suddenly appearing in front of you in the road while traveling at 50+ mph? I must say that even for someone who has been trained in defensive driving, natural instint would be to alter the direction of travel to avoid the object, not hit it.

Can't really say unless it happens. My first reaction will be to slam on my brakes and not swerve though. The one time I was in a car that hit a deer it was because the driver (my dad) swerved. We were on the way home one night and a deer popped out in front. My dad slammed on the brakes without swerving. The deer stayed in front of the car so he started to go around it. Then the deer started to run. Nailed it with the front pass. fender. Had he just hit the brakes the deer would've moved and the car would've been fine.

:Tony who wishes he could edit his post because it looks like I typed it out drunk with spelling and typos :P :

there was only one time i've ever encountered a deer and it was in a forest preserve.
once my folks hit a skunk and another time a duck, because both times, it was raining quite hard and so dark outside. gosh, we had to car wash the accord that time 3 times to get rid of that skunk smell.

So, back the the main point, actually nevermind.

Hey provench, here's some reputation points for, uh...avoiding the deer.
And fdl, you deserve some for providing the forum with such a lovely wmv streaming file.

Enjoy!

I went up to Madison, WI to service my TSX and I have never seen sooooo many dead deer carcasses on a stretch of road ever (I-90). I'm glad I saw them all over that way I can be a bit more cautious if I ever drive on that stretch at night.

tell me about it. I also see small groups of them on the way to or from work every other day ....still living ones that is.
It's a back road with no street lights at night so keeping your eyes on the shoulder half the time is the thing to do in my area.

Its nice to "say" you'd run into the deer rather than attempt avoiding it but fact it when faced with a decesion like that you have 1 or 2 seconds at the most to make a decesion. In most cases your insticts for survival kick in and your going to try and avoid that deer. I'm sure Gilbo would do the same if faced with that decesion. He's simply playing devil's advocate right now.

hitting a very large animal can be like hitting another car, or worse. The impact can kill you. In a fraction of a second do you have the judgement to say, hey that deer is small enough, i can hit it? I'd agree that swirving to avoid somethinglike a squirl may be a bad idea, but a deer? I dont think so. Its a big animal. What if its a moose? How quickly can you tell? Sorry, but thats not the way I want to go out.

hitting any deer is better than any pole or ending up in a pond/lake (this happens quite often as strange as it may seem)...

well..i've hit a coyote before size of a big dog...it was in the states near anaheim. nitetime, saw it come out, first was slam the brakes realize wont stop in time, thought about swerving but the brain took over and didnt want to end up fliped over in a ditch or wrap myself around a tree so just hit it. and then there was the racoon thign a month or so ago (i gotta stop taking country roads, but they're so much fun )

A raccon, rabbit etc is far different from a deer. I've run over a Rabbit, bird etc without flinching. But I've also stopped when presented with a deer in my headlights. Far different situations.

I think I'd swerve to miss a dog or coyote. This confirms my suspicsions. Gilboman is a cold hearted killer

These are oh my god or What the F*&^ situations in which you don't have any time to think You merely react. I live in New Hampshire and people DIE all the time from hitting Moose on the roads up here....so often times hitting the obstacle isn't always a viable option either.

I can see both of your points though, it could go either way. Provench had luck on his side because often times the deer are in herds and steering around one doesn't mean there isn't another one bounding aimlessly right behind it.

I have to give kudos to the TSX's Xenon headlights for without them Prov' mightnt have seen the deer until it was too late. Reaction time is key under these circumstances..

Also kudos to the TSX's handling. People often times forget how a good handling car CAN get you out of sticky situations....which is definately a plus.
But anyway, once again more Kudos to a great car and to Provench for keeping his sheet metal and paint job intact !

Two Points:
1) If you live in a heavy deeer area you should consider an electronic deer avoidance system like the hornet. I have one and it's worked on several occasions. Plus they pay up to $500 if you do hit one with the unit on.
2) If you know you're driving in a bad deer area, especially at night, then SLOW THE FUCK DOWN.
