Thinking of buying a TSX
Thinking of buying a TSX
Hello,
I'm a first-time poster and would appreciate some info. I'm thinking of buying an '04 TSX. The miles will be around 30,000 to 40,000 miles. I have two main questions:
1. I know Acuras are good cars. Is the TSX another example of how reliable they are? Have any of you had major problems with yours? I am selling my Audi A4, so I'm sure this would be much better than that.
2. How does the TSX handle in snow? I would probably need to put snow tires on it, but will it then be okay?
Thank you very much!

I have an '06, so a lot of '04 owners could share some issues specific to '04s. I've had no issue with my car so far (altough I have only 8K miles). From what I've seen so far, I believe the cars have been very reliable, most complaints seem to be related to rattles and squeaks. Nothing like your Audi!
I just had my first winter with my TSX. I live in Montreal, so we have cold temperatures, and quite a bit of snow. I got a set of winter tires (Pirelli WinterCarving), and I was very impressed with how the TSX performed in the snow. VSA does a good job, except in deep snow, where it kills any wheelspin, which you often need to accelerate; conveniently, the VSA switch deactivates the VSA system (as opposed to other cars like M-B, Lexus, where it stays on, but at a lower level), which enables the driver to retain control.
Overall, I would say I am very happy with the car's winter performance!

1. #1 resale value car in the nation by KBB and I think it could be the answer #1.
I have been driving mine for three years and had problem with brake rotors once but nothing else. No rattle and squeak at all.
2. I bought my car in Boston and had no problem with snow even with stock tires since VSA works really well

I've had my 06 for one year and I have the stock tires. The OEM tires handle above average in most driving conditions except icy roads. Any type of slush, icy or hard compact snow will send your VSA light flashing and your Anti-lock brakes pulsing. I usually used SS mode and 2nd gear on my 5AT to help with wheel slippage at starts. Having a good pair of snow tires will eliminate this problem during the winter months. Other than that, no issues that would keep me from recommending any model year of TSX.
I have close to 70K miles on mine ('04 6MT). Big repair was A/C system busted around 53K miles. Labor out of my pocket, and parts courtesy of Acura after writing Honda of NA a letter. Then Air/Fuel (O2) sensor replaced; did that myself at about 60K miles. Other than that, the car is very dependable and fun to drive.

'04 TSX here (AT), closing in on 40k miles. I've had no issues thus far (except the one headlight with condensation that Acura is now fixing with a TSB/recall). I bought mine used with 16k on the clock and have not had one issue.
I have an '04 with 47K miles. My only repair expense so far: $3,200 for hail damage last year. Had two recalls: a wire to the tail lights in the trunk, and the headlight/moisture thing. Both covered by Acura of course. So other than routine maintenance expenses (about $100 to $200 every 10K miles) my operational repairs have been $0. I'm very impressed with the quality of this car (though not so hard to achieve compared with the rotary-engined Mazdas I had been driving for 25 years, which were great fun, albeit real maintenance "black holes".)
P.S. I had none of the rattle problems, much-discussed a couple of years ago, and I got one of the first TSX's sold in my area.
I doubt you will be disapointed if you buy one.

Adding my two pennies here. I've only had my 06 TSX for about 6 mths, but going on to about 9k miles. NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. No rattles. Nothing. Other than the stupid bugs that keep wanting to commit suicide on my front bumper/lights area on highway.
They're probably attracted to my PWP or the HID lights... arrrrgggghhhhhhhh!

I've had mine for a year and 2 months, I'd have to say that there are NO problems whatsoever. However I am getting a few interior rattles which could be easily resolved by the dealer or myself.
Okay, so I've narrowed my search down to a 2004 TSX, a 2003/2004 Saab 9-3 Arc or a 2005 Subary Legacy GT sedan.
Granted, this is an Acura-centric forum, but does anyone have any comments on the three cars I'm thinking about?

reply to question about TSX reliability and performance in snow
The TSX is a great car in snow -- with or without snow tires (I've driven with both).
I live in Buffalo, NY, and last year we had a freak snow storm in mid-October that surprised even us. I usually put four snows (blizzaks) on my '04 TSX the week of Thanksgiving. But the Yoko Avids (second set of tires for my 74,000+ '04) gave me just as much traction and pull as the snows. Now I'm wondering if I will even bother with my next car -- an '07 similarly equipped (6MT, navi) TSX set to arrive in a couple of weeks.
And as for reliability -- my car has 74,000 miles on it with the original front brakes (I replaced the rears a couple months ago). And that is a record! My previous car was my beloved '94 accord ex (5MT), with the original clutch, that i sold to a friend and is still going strong and we're still friends!
You won't be disappointed with any Honda or Acura product. I'm on my fifth -- counting mine and my children's.
Enjoy!
