Tach Jumping around!

Anyone notice their tach jump on decell at the 1000 RPM area? Will jump between 800 and 1300 RPM. Anyone else experience this or know of a TSB on this issue?? Thanks.

Um...if you're decelerating, the tranny will switch gears to prevent the engine from bogging...perhaps this is what you are seeing?

I'm with 5AT and what I realize is that sometimes it's hard to get over 2k rpm... I have to really step on the gas to get it all of a suddent to jump pass it. Somehow it feels like it's 'stuck' there...

I have no idea what you're talking about...You sure you're driving a TSX?

Well.. unfortunately... yes...

(NOTE: BTW, I agree the theory of 6MT > 5AT... but don't think that 5AT = a running lepard got stuck in a mud field...

It doesn't feel like it's hunting for a gear at all, the tach just bounces around those RPM's and the engine isn't reving up or down with those numbers. The needle just bounces.

Hmmm...?? Well in that case you're on your own. Mine bounces but I also feel the rev of the engine coinciding with it.

That's weird...just think of it as a "special feature"

Is the A/C on? It may just be the compressor cycling.

Have you done any work or installation on your car involves electrical wiring? If so, double check where you tap your wiring and ground.

I think all cars with autos do this but it's much more noticable in the TSX because of the gear ratio and the firmness of the shifts. Kinda freaked me out at first you get used to it.

Are we talking about the needle on the tach jumping around without the actual change in engine speed? or the rpm seems higher than normal during deceleraton even with the foot off the pedal?

if you don't notice the feedback with the changing rpms, then yes, something might be wrong (clearly, the tach shouldn't be jumping if there is no change in the rpm).

i would think it would be trying to downshift to keep from going below a certain rpm. just out of curiosity, are you driving in regular at or ss mode? i ask because i use ss 99% of the time and i can't recall ever noticing this issue.

Yes, we are talking about the needle on the tach jumping around without the actual change in engine speed!

I was originally thinking, maye it may be the TPS, but the engine does not go up or down in speed or actual RPM. So I do not think it is the TPS anymore. It is bone stock, engine wise.

I've seen the tach jump on those highly modded cars.... Probably bc it can't keep up with the revs... what do you have under the hood?

I've notived the tach bouncing up a few hundred RPM's at various times, too, with the 5AT, usually as the engine slows to idle when stopping. It's hard to tell if the engine actually revs, or the tach is just bouncing. I was thinking it might be emissions related - part of the LEV thing.

If that's the case, I have experienced similar problem before on my other car which had some wiring work done. The needle on the tach would just sweep or jump randomly which certainly not the actual engine speed. I can't remember what the actual cause was but it had something to do with poor wiring contact or ground. Does it happen all the time?

Yeah, if your tach is jumping around without a real change in engine rpm, that's no normal and you should have it checked by the dealer.

On an AT, it's normal for the engine to downshift to keep the engine from bogging at low RPMs, but this doesn't seem to be the case for you G36.

A tach shouldn't jut, "bounce" around! Unless there's an electrical problem. I was thinking a throttle position sensor, or now maybe even a speed sensor. With these new cars now days, hell, it could be caused from a lose lug nut or something Ifyanowhatimean

My tach usually jumps way up when no cops are around, then jumps back down when I see one

Have your dealer check it out, the problems seems to be very apparent, then it won't be a problem to dealers to do repairs.
