Suggestions on where to mount aftermarket GPS
#6
sorry, not to thread hijack or anything, but what would be the best aftermarket gps navi out there? My roomate just bought an 06 tsx (with some convincing from me) and is regretting not getting navi.
Thanks
Thanks

i like the clock too, but i had to make a compromise. i didn't want to mount on the windshield, as it's apparently illegal here in CA. later on i may mount it in one of the storage compartments and hook up an external gps antenna. for now though it's fine and it doesn't interfere with visibility.

Pros for portable:
- my top of the (current) line Garmin 660 Nuvi cost me $1000 bucks Can. The navigation system in the TSX (in Canada) costs $3000.
- we can change it to whatever car we'd like. Example: we put it in our other car when we take the other car, and it was particularly useful when we recently had a rental at a far-away conference. Stuck it in there and it was breeze to find our way around in the new city.
- You can get more recent system with the portables.
- if you sell/return your TSX, the GPS stays with you.
Cons for the portable:
- You may have to store your GPS everytime you stop (if you don't feel safe with it in plain view) (this is why I paid more money for one that stores in my purse)
- it blocks part of your windshield
- telephone and navigation are not integrated, so navigation verbal directions continue when you're on the phone (although you can ask the GPS to repeat them if you missed them the first time), and if you try and call someone while the navigation is "speaking", it will mess up your verbal commands.
- screen is smaller EDIT: although I personally don't feel that's a drawback, I've also tried a GPS with smaller screen size (360), I don't feel it as "small" either. Actually, anymore, and it would be a problem IMO, as it blocks part of your windshield.
Recommended GPS: The Garmins. I love my Nuvi 660, but I'm heard others love their 360 and lower-priced Garmins as well. I personally feel my Garmin 660 is worth twice its price, I find it so convenient...

Check it out at Garmin's web site.
I paid $600 for it 3 months ago, but yesterday, saw it at Costco online for about $459. You could probably find it even cheaper than that.

i'd say have a look at tomtom go series and the garmin nüvi series, they're both best in class. of course it depends on what you want, how you'll use it etc. i got the tomtom go 910 which comes with maps for europe as well as north america which was great to have now that i visited us earlier this fall. the tomtom also comes with a 20 gig hdd which you can fill up wtith audio books, mp3, pictures and what not, but then again it's a bit bigger than the garmin 660 (they're about the same price and come with the same features)..
