Question Standard or Automatic ?

Hi Ya'll,
I am purchasing a Black/Parchment TSX in June, but I can't decide if I should get a standard or automatic. I've talked to numerous dealers and I've gotten mixed feedback. I live in NY now because of college so I am some what worried about the stop and go traffic. For those of you who own the automatic what do you think of the sport shift? My dealer recommended the standard because it makes the TSX very fun to drive. What do you guys think?

get an auto only cause if some other person who doesn't know how to drive manual can drive ur car. plus, u can have the manual mode option anyways, but of course its still not the same as a stick.

also, take into account if you're in a lot of stop and go traffic, 6 speed manual isn't practical, unless you like getting your left foot and right hand sore and tired.

Welcome aboard but this topic has been discussed many times before. You should check this thread out first: http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/show...&highlight=6mt

If that one doesn't answer your questions, try the feature. I have the 6MT and like it a lot.

I actually regrated that I didn't get 6MT for my TSX because my wife might drive my TSX from time to time. But I later found out she doesn't really drive my TSX at all.

SS is very nice. The best in this price range, but 6MT will make TSX fly.

I haven't seen any posts from people that got the MT and then regreted it. Get the MT unless you will be stuck in stop-n-go traffic for extended times (say more than 1/2 hour each way daily). The SS feature is nice but I hardly use it. The AT has adequate acceleration but not nearly as much fun to drive as the MT.

Get a MT!!! I love my auto TSX, but I would trade for a manual anyday.

If you weight out the pros and cons, the manual will certainly outweight the automatic, at least for the TSX.

Alright here are the pros and cons:

6MT
Pro: best performance
Con: you have to shift

SS
Pro: you don't have to shift
Con: reduced performance

Technically, when in SS you still have to shift. But, you don't have to clutch.

Oh, and Dan, what goggles?

I'm definitely MT biased but if you have a lot of traffic get the auto...

As an owner of 2 AT vehicles plus the TSX AT, I find that the TSX AT is way more fun to drive than any other AT vehicle [that I can afford], yet still offers the convenience of being simple to operate, for those who are MT-challenged.

Is the AT less enjoyable to drive spiritedly than the MT? Definitely. Does it afford you the same level of control as the MT? No way. BUT it's a helluvalot easier to manage in stop-and-go traffic. In fact, I find I use SS a lot more often in heavy traffic, because it's nice to modulate speed with just only the gas pedal in SS1 or SS2, with an occasional tap on the brake. Not having to use a clutch is nice.

I have had the exact same experience as ecsw. Only instead of regrated it, I regretted it for a while. But know I find it really convenient now. But this type of decision should be made by you and your driving habits. Which would you want to drive every day?

Go for the manual. Since you're in college, you're probably gonna get a lot of people asking to borrow your car for dates and stuff like that. Since many people can't drive manual it's to your advantage because no one will borrow your car and then you don't have to worry about it being messed up by anybody. On top of that the manual is just more fun and when you're not in stop n' go traffic you're going to regret not having the 6MT.

This is a reason NOT to buy an auto. Why would you want someone messing up your (non-memory) seat settings?

On the stop and go thing: I find that my right foot gets tired in an auto. Thus, the auto is more fatiguing as one foot has to do everything. Maybe it's just me.

Get the manual. I too thought my wife would drive my TSX sometimes and opted for the auto. My wife has never ever driven my car because she does not like to drive. I wish she would have told me that before I bought the automatic.

Hmmm, not sure I quite understand all that technical babble. Care to explain it in English Dan

Anybody here drive a stick in very hilly areas? I live out here in Cali where the hills are numerous and many times steep. I'd love to get a MT, but how much of a pain would it be in the hills?

The gears on the 6MT are sufficiently low, even 4th and 5th, that you can probably scale most hills w/o downshifting.

Get this sucker up above 2500 rpm and look out!

Wait a minute! I have a SS. I resent that, besides if I weren't married I could get all the pussy.

You must have the special TSX that doesn't have right-foot actuated gas and brake pedals. Last I checked, both AT and MT versions were equipped with these.

OT, any left-foot brakers out there?

I only left foot brake in AT cars. I have been known to left foot brake at the odd race track in an MT car but only when it's FWD. Sometimes you need to rotate the rear a bit more and a little brake while you're on the gas will fix it up nicely. That's where RWD would be nice....

I don't use my left foot to brake.

MT cars don't require you to brake as much because they don't feel the need to upshift every time you take your foot off the gas. My right foot stays on/near the gas pedal unless I'm coming to a complete stop. As it doesn't have to move back and forth from brake to gas so much, my right leg is less tired.
