Service at Dealer says Timing Belt

I have heard great things about the dealer I bought from but why the heck do they tell me I have a timing belt on my 05 TSX AT???? Do you think they just want to make money?? If that is the case I will call and confront them

cause most dealers dont know what the hell they are talking about most of the time. they know more about trying to get people's money than about cars

Timing chain last longer but once it is old and stretched out, be ready for the infamous timing chain rattle. TO me timing belt is soo much better, even though it needs to be change at 100k its worth it than having your engine sound like a sewing machine.

So even if you change the timing chain, it will cost more than it would for a regular belt change. Because it involves more work to remove the whole front part of the chain cover, as the chain uses motor oil for lube. Almost like part of an internal.

I dont know who said timing chain does NOT need to be replace, but Ford, Nissan and many other manufactor uses them and they are known to break, snap and jump gears when they get old. Especially on a high revving motor, I wouldnt risk it.

i think people refer to the timing chain not needing replacement, because you wait till it wears out rather than having to replace it on a proactive basis. I had over 145k miles on my nissan altima with no timing chain issues.

3 words: timing chain tensioner.
Timing chains are generally good for the life of the engine.

160k miles on my Nissan GA16DE w/timing chain and still running strong.

Who did you speak with? Service advisor? Receptionist? Girl who makes the appointments? Turnover in most dealerships can be pretty high, and if you weren't talking to an Advisor, I wouldn't get too excited. If you were talking to an advisor, I'd think about another dealer....

The timing chain is not even on the maintenance schedule. Chain > belt. Btw, the oil pump is also driven by a chain off the crank.

You don't change tensioners, you adjust it.
Same deal with timing belts.

All they`ll do is inspect it once in a while, that`s it.

I have the SR20DE engine in my Nissan 200SX-SER with 125K miles and the timing chain is still good.

What is there to adjust, chain tensioner is pressurize by oil pressure. Chain tensioner guide wears out as they are plastic.

It is right that chain lasts, but its the related component that wears out. Timing gears is the other, they're only metal that heats up, cool down, and wear . Nuff said, to each maintain they're own vehicle. I been through so many Ka24de and sr20det's .

My dealership told me as long as i keep up the regular oil changes I should never have to touch the timing chain. Good as long as the maintance is good.

I have a friend who recently had the timing belt snap on his Mitsubishi Lancer. End result......broken rocker arm, bent valve, and damaged pistion=stuffed engine.

Timing belts? No thanks.

Yeah, I'm with you. Whoever it was who thought to combine the timing belt, the water pump (which is prone to siezing and frying the belt) and the interference engine was a repair-work-profits genius. I had that happen on a '94 Camry (except, luckily, it was non-interference). Twelve hours later I had the water pump and timing belt replaced (d.i.y. -- what else?). Ridiculous.

I much prefer a chain. It lasts longer -- with a tensioner and regular oil changes, ostensibly forever -- and it's WAY less likely to break or shear a tooth and do damage. Not foolproof, it's mechanical, but much better system.

I thought timing belts were invented to make engines quieter (and maybe increase dealer repair profits?). I don't mind at all if my engine sounds like it's mechanical. It is.
