Rust Proofing

Is it worth paying for rust proofing when I buy my TSX?

The outer body is covered by a 5-year/unlimited-mile limited warranty against rust-through. I don't think it would be a benifit unless you live next to the ocean (salt-water).

I haven't found any credible/technical articles that supports adding on "rust proofing" to cars. If anyone knows of any, please advise.

On the other hand, I have read articles from Consumer Reports that rust proofing may cause more harm than good. This spray on crap can clog drainage or create new pockets of trapped moisture, whether it's condensation or road spray.

In some cases, according to Consumer Reports, some dealers added NOTHING to the car. The car is fine without rust proofing, but they offer rust proofing under the guise of an insurance-type of policy.

For some dealers, it's a big sucking mechanism to rake in more money from customers. It's like the scam of adding Dealer Preparation Fees, Dealer Association Fees, and grossly inflated doc fees to the sales price--it's all the guise of a nicer way of extorting or coercing more money from customers. It's easier to extort if the customer at least _perceives_ there's some "added value or benefit".

I noticed that dealers in my area weren't pushing "rust proofing" like they used to 10-20 years ago.

it depend where you live, and but you don't need to have dealer doing it for you, dealer chages more.. plus 3rd party may be more professional too....
i got it from dealer becase they put a package together that i felt reasonable. also my previous experiences with the package was very good (but not this time with TSX)

I would definitely have it if I were still living in N. Michigan. The ones that are saying no don't live in a frozen climate. They use lots of salt here but the temperature rarely stays below freezing for more than a few days. My point is... Here you can get to a car wash to rinse the salt. Can you where you live on a regular basis during the winter?
