Road & Track First Drive '06 TSX Writeup

Just got my February R&T, they state that Acura claims a 13hp increase from '05 to '06 if the SAE Standards for 2006 are not considered. The picture of it makes it look really sweet.

I still think if the TSX could not get 1st, at least give it to the Accord. Anything but the jetta! It should lose more points just for it's looks, let alone longevity.

Nice scans...sad to see the TSX in 3rd.

However, you can kinda see why this was the case based on objective acceleration numbers. But speed alone does not make a car great.

I had to laugh.....Car and Driver said the Accord lacked visual pizazz...Yeah right...did they actually take a look at the front of that Jetta......UGH! And those rims look like they were pulled out of a Cuisinart food blender.

Those car mags rarely add in reliabilty issues into their judgement unless they had issues during their tests. That being said they chose a car built in Mexico as their top car and I doubt they were unaware of it. Take that for what it's worth.

After looking at promo photos on the VW website, the Jetta doesn't look half bad - on the exterior. I was one of few to call it "fugly" in the other thread. The interior however looks like it missed the trip to the 21st century. Why the f... would anyone need sound control knobs (base, middle, treble, balance, fader) all lined up in the middle of the stereo console?

^^^How can you look at the front end of the GLI in the pic above and not conclude that it's fugly? It's horrible.

I agree the photos in the article looks fugly. The pictures of the Jetta on VW's website look pretty decent. Are they not the same car?

I haven't looked close enough. Maybe VW offers more than one front end on this car. One can only hope.

R&T assigned a substantial number of the total available points to a "Gotta Have It" factor. WTF is that? The only other consideration seems to be how fast the cars go. I wouldn't be getting too upset over it.

The regular jetta model has chrome grill that's why it looks better. But the one in the pic, looks like it's missing the middle of it's front. So much for VW being "the people's car".... seriously, I can't justify current VW prices....

The "gotta have it" factor is an excuse. In Canada, the civic SI won the new sports car category. So where does that leave the Corvette Z06 you ask? Well, they created a category called "gotta have it" or some bullshit like that. And ofcourse the corvette won. Pathetic!

Actually its probably more of a "peoples car" this year, being the GLI/2.0T has expanded into the TSX category. Last years model GLI wasnt close and the base model jetta is still afforable to younger familys looking for a good base car.....It would seem they are expanding to a wider range of the public.

On the closed thread "2006 Road And Track first drive *SCANNED PIC
" you can see pic of the TSX better. Note that the TSX is a fabulous Royal Blue Pearl!

yes, couldn't agree more. Volkswagens and Audis have HORRIBLE grilles. UGH makes me nauseous just thinking about it.

Edmunds Inside line also wrote very extensively about the TSX and the GLI and said they are so similar, and that it's one of the closest comparison tests thy have ever had. They also said 'Things were so close that if you removed the nav system and its associated price penalty from the TSX we're pretty sure it would have been a dead heat.'

Thats an awesome compliment even mentioning jetta and bmw in the same sentence like that......but i do wonder about your comparison......if its a poor mans bmw and the new jetta still has better performance and value over the TSX.
Where does that leave the TSX in your opinion?

Considering the poor man's BMW is the lowest model of the 3 series, and the Jetta is a car I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy(unless it was a girl with rich parents), I think it'd put the TSX in pretty good standing. Just because Jetta's can be fun to drive but break all the time is not a good reason to compare them to BMWs. Compare them to Audis.
