Request for tint pics
Request for tint pics
Hey everyone,
I'm looking to get tint in the next week or so.
I bought my car around Mid July. Do you think I still need moleskin?
Also, I am thinking about going with either 35% or 20%. I was wondering if anyone with either of these tints would be kind enough posting their pics.
I have carbon Grey myself and still not sure what I should go with. Is there a shade between 35 and 20 that many shops offer?
I live in Cali where it is illegal to tint anything more than 70% on the font windows. So I will mostly like just be doing the 2 doors (4 windows total) and the rear window.
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I have 20%, which is illegal in Maryland. There is a tint between 35 and 20, but if you're going to go illegal, might as well go 20. When I first got it done, I thought it was too dark, but it's just fine now that Im used to it. And as far as I know, they didnt add mole skin to my windows... and they are fine.
I have 35% on a NBP - looks good. No moleskin and the tint is scratched. I would just have them do it while they're in there. Here's a link to pics (although not specifically showing the tint).

Also, in PA it is "illegal" to have this on the front windows but the rule is a little subjective here. A cop can choose to write a ticket or not based on how well he feels he can see inside the car. With 35% you can still see inside pretty easily even though it is technically beyond the legal limit here (also 70%). I'd research your laws in CA and go ahead and put tint on the front sides too, it looks better than just the back sides. There is a link in a thread here somewhere if you do a little searching. Good luck!

actually no... i didn't know about moleskin after i read one of the threads about moleskin on this site
about scratches, yeah got some scratches,
but only the driver side though... i should've gotten some moleskin to protect the tint. anyway, i'm pretty satisfied by their work...

Legal limit on the fronts in California is 70% (the Federal minimally required light transmission), which is pretty much what you get from standard factory glass with no additional tint. Anytint beyond the slight normal darkening of any safety glass will put you over the legal limit.
Some tint companies make a very light "UV" film, which is something like 80%. It'll darken it slightly, but not enough to likely cause a problem. Formula One calls theirs "UVShield." http://www.formulaone.com/data.html Again, something like this on top of factory glass probably puts you over the technical limits, but you probably couldn't make the case without a transmission densitometer to measure it with.
In my experience, you're unlikely to run into trouble with any cops. Most cops realize these rules are pretty much BS and can't be bothered unlss they're already stopping you for something else. Everybody I know who has been nailed for an illegal tint has had it happen when the car was parked on the street and the "meter maids" got them. Same for missing front license plates. The meter maid's job is to find reasons to write tickets, and they're just driving around all day looking for potential issues.
If you don't often park on public streets in urban areas, this is probably not an issue. In my section of LA it's enough of an issue that I won't do front tint or missing front plate. Fix-it tickets aren't all that expensive, but the actual fix can be a major pain.
Also, these things can be a problem if you have to move and re-register your vehicle in another state. Often they'll do a more thorough inspection when you initially register the car.
I find a tint darker than 70% to really limit visibility at night. Lots of pedestrians around here and they aren't always brightly lit.
