remote starts are always more $$$ than you think. Bypassing the immobilizer costs big bucks. be prepaired to spend at least $350 for the remote start+install. the viper 160XVL isn't too bad, try best buy.

Winter morning warmup

If you have electric nearby, consider an engine block heater (cheaper in the long run and gets you to about the same place). If you are really on a budget, just get a ceramic heater to put in the cabin. After 10-15 minutes, the interior is toasty, windows defogged/deiced. Pull the heater out and you are ready to go in the morning.

It is pretty hard on an engine (your fuel mileage and the environment) to idle long periods when it is cold.

So, where are you anyway? I can't see from your profile.

I have the Viper 5500... can't go wrong with this one. It si spendy though ($500) I live in Alaska, so the environment matters less to me than being able to handle my car when I get in. A block heater is NOT the same thing! If you plug it in, yes it keeps the engine from freezing, but the interior of the car still is the same temp. as the outside. Depends on where you are I guess. Some people think that 30 is cold... me, well I have to deal with -20, so I need my car to run for 20 minutes before it is warm.

Install can be timely on a TSX. Be ready to go without your car for a day or more. And if they don;t know what they are doing... well that might be longer.

^any amount of extended idling is bad for your car.

that said... it's kind of unavoidable living in a big city like Chicago, NY, or LA. Any of the Directed Electronics family of products (Viper, Hornet, DEI, etc...) should be fine. I've got a remote start / alarm combo that has a 2-way remote, timer, temperature, etc... It's sweet.

It's even convenient when it's not too cold because you just start up the car while you're walking to your car, you jump in get in gear and go. Just make sure you that the transmitter is long enough for you. If you're just warming up the car in front of your house, then you don't need to much transmitter strength.

I'm running a avistart 4400 with the two way pager. I don't really need the pager, but the distance isn't bad and starting the car a little bit earlier is better on the gas mileage for me.

Cold mornings trying to move my car i let it warm up atleast a few minutes but still one of the cons is your freezing in the car for those few minutes.

Absolutely do not install it yourself. As for Compustar... well you get what you pay for. The range on my Viper 5500 is listed at one mile, but it actually works at about one kilometer. The best feature about my Viper system is that I can be in the basement of our gymnasium (I'm a teacher / coach) and I can start the car from the locker room and tell that the car has started. Impressive range considering all the concrete and rebar in the way. Plus the parking lot is about 1/4 mile away.

I just got the bran new Autopage RS 900 system for christmas from my girlfriend and its a really nice system so far. I have only played with it for a day and i found out that i need increase the crank time to start it when its really cold because it takes a little longer to start it than the guy programed it. It has a full mile range on it and, 2 way remote and tons of goodies. My locks now automatically unlock when i turn the car off, my windows will be programed to go down and up by him in two weeks as he didn't have time to do it then due to the holiday schedule.

I've had the Viper 771XV on 2 of my cars (1998 Accord and 2005 TSX) and I love it. Yes it hurts ur gas mileage, but it's a great convenience.

I personally try to let my car warm up before I drive off. What's the difference in remote starting your car for 5 minutes and sitting in your car for 5 minutes with it cranked up? I think it's worse for the engine when you jump in and VTEC, with the engine being cold vs letting it sit idled for 5 minutes. I think running the ceramic heater in your car (risking setting the car on fire and using electricity) is worse than idling it for a few minutes. Just my

I would say get the engine heater. It is only $60. You can buy a timer so that it will turn on half an hour before you are ready to go and you will have heat in your cab almost immediately. If you live in a cold climate it will help with cold starts and be better for the engine.

What is the rational behind the comment about idling when it is cold?

Extended idling

Good point. My comment averse to extended idling is obviously from an earlier life. I should RTFM before I post.

The SLK manual indicates the starting procedure is to turn the key and release. The starter automatically determines how long to crank the engine. I can find no mention regarding idling. Put it in gear and go.

The RAV4 manual indicates the engine should idle about 10 seconds before driving. “If the weather is below freezing, let the engine warm up for a few minutes before driving.”

The TSX manual doesn’t mention idling after starting. Put it in gear and go.

The TSX manual regarding Vehicle Storage for over a month: “If possible, periodically run the engine until it reaches full operating temperature (the cooling fan cycles twice). Preferably, do this once a month."

It appears that Honda believes that extended idling to warm the TSX causes no damage to it. The environment, however…

My bad. :surrender

Extended idling to warm your Honda/Acura

This post is a following up on my previous post. It would make more sense if I could edit the prior post, IMHO. However, this site, unlike the others I frequent, doesn’t allow edits for more than a few minutes after the original post.

It appears that Mercedes Benz recommends that the engine is started only to drive the car. In storage, leave it alone; use a trickle battery charger if the car is stored for more than a month or so. Drive the car at moderate speeds to warm it.

http://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...r-storage.html

I don't drive the roadster much in the winter because I only have summer tires. Thus, the point is largely moot in that instance.

That's why the TSX works so well as my daily driver.

However, what is relevant here is what Honda recommends for its vehicles. So let it idle to warm it, if you want.

I've been very tempted to get one this year too weepingcat, but after a lot of research and thinking I decided against it. As nice as it is to have one, I couldn't spend that kind of money, I'll tough it out, although that leather can be pretty damned cold on the arse. I'll take one for the environment on this one.

I remember reading somewhere 2mins to warm up a TSX in cold weather starts and it really warms up quickly after you start driving. If you do go with one all I can recommend is to NOT get it from a big box discount place like Best Buy or FutureShop. Go to a place that specialises in car accessories like stereo installs and performance parts, somewhere like Adrenalin Audio, or evern JB's Power center.

It`S not so exensive to mount a Remote start !

I have done it with 3 of my older cars.
I did buy a alarm with remote from eBay 70$ includer shipping !
Mount it myself for free ! did work perfect everyday

On my other car I did install a GSM Remote Alarm !
Just pick up the phone (wherever in the world you are) and start your car with a Voice call
The GSM alarm have MANY other functions, like turn off fuel pump if the car is stolen, call the car an listen , SMS and check if it`s locked and armed... and much more..

The GSM remote did cost 150-300$ on eBay.
The install did I do myself for free !

I`m now going to install my GSM on the TSX.
The only "problem" is that the TSX have a Start-relay alarm (is that what you call imobilaiser?\\sorry bad english\\)

But I just need to NOT use the OEM car alarm, then it`s not activaded and no problem

I just need to find out how I open the damn console... I cand find the screws :s
