Quick long trip review

Hey everyone,

Last week, I moved from Dallas to Raleigh. The total trip was about 1295 miles which my roomate made with me. Along with him in the car, I had about everything I owned stuffed in the trunk and the back seat to the point that I could barely see out the back window. So about 400 pounds extra including my passenger.

The car still drove so nicely and I couldn't really tell that I had to much in the car except when I was doing down black mountain, I had some really really nasty vibration from the rotors. I think I'm taking it in to get them turned because it shook the hell outta the car and made a nice bit of noise as well.

The thing that was totally shocking though was my gas milegage. Over the 4 times I filled up, I got 31.5, 32.5, 32, and 33 mpg. This totally blew me away the first tank and I thought it was some fluke except that it kept doing it even through the mountains. I also had the AC going the whole time with cruise set between 75 and 80 with a couple of 85 and 90 mph stints. When I moved from Raleigh to Dallas the first time, I got 28 the whole way with the same load and driving the same way. The only difference was I had 3000 miles on my car the going and 20000 coming and I know have my Injen CAI and DC headers.

Anyway, I'm totally giving credit to the headers and intake for making such a huge difference. I know the engine being broke in has something to do with it was well but not enough to make 5 mpg difference. So unless anyone else has a suggestion as to why the difference, I'm giving the headers 3 thumbs up!

Thats cool to hear about the header increasing gas milage, i've been considering a header, i'm scared to do the install myself, but don't wanna pay a pro to do it

Yeah, installing was pretty straight forward, but there were a couple times at the end that I kinda worried that I jacked something up.

But I think that as long as you have the write tools and semi-know what your doing then you'll be fine.

I had zero car experience except for changing oil and such and now I've tackled the CAI install and the headers so I'm feeling little more confident know. But that way I look at it is that its the only way your ever going to learn

2 weeks ago i drove my 05 AT with 3 passengers and me from San Jose CAL to Reno Nev. I was using the AC and going up the grade and cruising between 75 and 80 mph and i still get 31 mpg and that is just stock engine.
Couple days ago i took the resonator out and it took me 45 minutes to do it thanks to all of you that show me the fender removal technique. Now the car seems to breathe easier and made a little bit more noise but with a deep growl. But for some reason it lagged at between 2500 rpm and 3000rpm. I am thinking of getting the CAI in the near future. The K&N filter should give it some more flexable breathing room, thats is my next thing i am going to buy. So far Kragan's dont have it in stock...they have to order it...and it costs over 54 bucks, i saw it on the net and it cost 36.67 bucks thanks to you guys info...

I took my car from LA to SF when it only had 5K miles on it. i got 30 MPG last year. Your gas mileage is not surprising since car was broken in.

The TSX is a hell of a highway cruiser. I've done a 7 hour stint in it without a break and it's still ultra comfortable.

Coming down Black Mountain is a killer on the brakes. I've taken it a couple of times to get up to Mt. Mitchell since the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed past Asheville.

Yeah, I thought I'd be smooth and put it in neutral and just coast down. It took about 20 seconds to get up to 90 and was like "oh shit!" Engine braking is a real bonus going down the side of a mountain.
