Picking up tonight.... how to break in?
I've heard vary the RPMs, but I drive on the highway/freeway (<--- for the westside folks) to work. Stay under 3k RPM? And let the fun begin at 1000 miles on the ODO?
SO EXCITIED!!!
Thanks!

actually they say 600 miles is broken in if im not mistaken. but then again im not there yet either
you can do a search there have been other threads talking about this but here is one

like ebcheon said:
but in short, here are break-in tips:
1. keep rpm under 4500k
2. keep it under 70mph
3. vary rpm as much as possible under 4500k rpm
4. apply brakes gently for first 200 miles
5. do this for first 600 miles (some people say they get more hp/torque if they break-in for 1000 miles)

OK, this is what I did :
"Oops, I went over 5k, didn't I?"
"Oops, there it is again!"
"What?? 90mph already?? No way!"
"whoaaa!!!! bad downshift! way over 5k!"
"Sorry officer, I thought I was only doing 65."
but what you should do is follow what the other guys said.

I was looking into an all highway break-in. While it's not the best way to break in a car, if you're careful I believe it can be done. Drive in different gears to vary the RPM. If you can, every 10-20 miles coast down an off ramp and accelerate back up an on ramp. This will ensure you are moving through all the gears and help seat the piston rings. If you only travel 10-20 miles on the highway each commute you're fine. Drive normally, and once you have a few hundred miles under your belt you can start moving up the RPM a bit every now and then.
While I might plan and think about it, I'll probably end up doing what rzee did

i also didn't downshift the entire time i broke in the car. this is my first MT, so i didn't know how high the rpm would rev while downshifting.

better NOT to pick it up today .. it's raining like MAD here in Philly !! Where did you get your car from again - what dealer ???
I'll be getting mine in the next few months, hopefully !!!
We had to pick my dad's new TL up in the rain last night, and it just plain SUCKED to be driving a new car home in the rain !!

I'm getting it from sussman in maple shade, NJ. Because deal and supposedly one of the best services around here in philly. Tried to get it from the sussman in willow grove, but they were too greedy and wouldn't match the price.
interesting method.. check this out http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
I hear ya on the Willow Grove/Jenkintown Sussman .. they ARE too greedy. We just got my dad's TL at Turnersville for MORE than $500 UNDER invoice and those bastards at Sussman told me they were getting $1000 OVER invoice and were sticking to it !!! Hell, they're 2003's and EVERYONE is discounting, and these morons wanted $1000 over invoice ...
Regarding the TSX, it's probably gonna be either Turnersville (got MY CL & my dad's TL there) .. or Sussman Maple Shade ... whoever gives me the best deal ...
Service is pretty good at Turnersville though ...

I just don't think I'd have the guts to run the crap out of my new car right after driving it off the lot. The oil change after 20 miles is interesting, though. I think I might do that -- it can't actually hurt anything...
These different theories would be sooo easy to test, though. For something that seems so important to the engine's lifetime and performance, one would think there'd be more objective data!

Definately do not change your oil before about 3000 miles. Don't listen to what that link said. Your engine will not properly seat if you change it before that. There is definately hell to pay if you do this too early. After that, I highly recommend using Mobil 1 with the OEM filter for the rest of your ownership. As for the first 600 miles (which is your break-in cycle), defintely vary your revs and put on a decent amount of miles each time out (10-12 miles) if at all possible.

From what i read it might hurt. Acura has put a special type of oil to break in the engine. I don't think changing it too quickly is a good idea.

Do you, by chance, know which oil they use? The "Break-In Secrets" article mentioned that you should not use synthetic oil during break in b/c it is too slippery. Perhaps Acura simply uses a petroleum oil initially to aid in setting the rings. Maybe doing an early oil change and replacing the oil with more of the same stuff won't hurt...
Anyway, when I die, I'm going to ask God (or, if things don't go very well, Satan) if these variations in break-in actually matter, cause it looks like there's no definitive answer here. The G35 guys break in their cars for 1200 miles, here everyone seems to do 600 -- some say drive like an aged grandparent, others say redline it at every turn...
Gosh, I not only have the stress of waiting 2 more months for my car -- I now have to worry if I'll break it in correctly once it finally gets here...

1. Why does changing the oil too early compromise seating of the rings?
2. When you say vary the revs, do you mean up to 4.5k or so, or all the way to redline?
Thanks for the advice...

how do u recommend breaking it in? i believe that the break in secrets does make sense, but could we buy the 'special' break in oil when we change it... hehe? and you dont think redlining the engine in different gears is a good idea?
Break in is not Necessary..
Because, who ever test drove your TSX before you would have reached Red line before you..
Unless. You bought the one with less than 3 miles and have all the body covering stickers..

I think I have to refrain myself from playing rock/rap during my break in period...hmm...maybe Dido will be great for break in :-*
Oh and mine will be PPW/Ebony/5AT/OEM body kit and fog, and her name is "Claire"

Also try not to do any heavy braking for the first 200 miles, the pads need time to seat properly. If you go hard on the brakes too early you'll glaze the pads and limit your brakes effectiveness.

The manual doesnt say anything about the speed that the car should be driven during the break in period. Just to avoid rapid accelaration and excessive braking.
I just picked up my tsx yesterday and am taking a 150 mile trip tomorrow. Id love to drive it instead of the 94 accord, but not if there could be a problem.
Can someone explain the 'dont go over 70' rule to me?
Thanks

I think the person who said 'Drive it like you stole it is correct'.
I was kind of surprised to find out that Accura used break-in oil in their engines. I thought car makers stopped using it in the 60's when I was a kid.
I always heard that you were supposed to break in a car the way you planned to drive it.
I didn't hear anything about the 70 MPH speed limit though. I broke mine in on a 900 mile trip to S.D. varyng my speed between 9:00 and noon on the speedometer.
My TSX replaced a Regal with the 3800 V6. The TSX will probably never get the gas milage of the Regal, but it sure is a lot more fun to drive off the freeway. Hopefully, Acura will stuff the 3.2 from the TL under the TSX hood next year.

Don't worry about the 150 mile trip. Drive it and just enjoy it! The 70 MPH rule, not everyone follows, but it's just tradition or something I guess that makes people follow it. If you decide to take your car (which you most definitely will), vary your RPMs so your engine can have a variation in the breakin. Switch between 5th and 6th gear every 10-15 mins.
ENJOY!!!!
ENJOY!!!!
hey i know how to brake in properly...
i am a graduate studnet from universal technical institude and ASE certified,,,,so u can trust me on this one ,,,,,
the best way to brake in ur engine is that drive ur tsx in city,,,,which means vary ur rpm,,,,no high way driving(steady rpm)and there is no such thing there is speed limit of 70 mph!
and u dont wanna change first engine oil before 3000 mi ,after that u can just use regular oil(no mobile1-syntethic oil) for like 10.000,mi i should say..... then u can use any oil u want and change every 3.000 miles
