I'm actually a little bit confused. I've always thought that in California we are required to have a front license plate and I checked with the DMV rulebooks and that's what it says. However, lately I've been observing cars in my neighborhood and I've noticed quite a few cars (not new cars) that don't have a front license plate. Will they get ticketed?

For the most part, police officers in Cali don't bother people specifically for not having a front plate. It's usually something that they can tag on to another ticket. I've been pulled over before and the officer didn't even notice the front plate missing.

if they are lucky enough... and they don't run into any cops with a bad temper ... they should be fine

Something tells me your government could care less about removing the front plate from cars. The money this would cost in changing laws and updating computer systems just to be cosmetic doesn't make sense to me.

I do not run with a front plate on, here in California..
I have been pulled over once for no front plate , in five years.

It cost me 10 bucks for a fix it ticket, once the cop wrote it off.
The plate came off...10 bucks for fives years for a "no plate fee", is a good deal ..IMO

I look at it as just another reason to be pulled over. Put on your front license plate.

I got slapped with 2 no front plate tickets.

One, I got pulled over for my loud exhaust. Cop asked me to pop my hood, saw that I had no plate. Wrote me up a ticket for no plate. $25.

A couple weeks later, I parked outside my friend's apartment. Meter maid, left me a ticket for no front plate. $25.

Blah...

10 dollars for no front plate in five years...I win! jk..

I personaly think a front plate takes all the good looks from the front of the car.

If there was a modifiyed front plate: like something norrower , and smaller. I would put it back on.

right now....I rather do without the billboard...

I have pass plenty of cops, and not once have I been pulled over.
They must have seen me coming up on them...

Maybe they are looking fo some real action...

Hate to break it to you...

Front plates will NEVER be gone from California.

The insistance on writing up front plate tickets is for one thing only - red light cams.

They snap your front plate along with your face if you go through a red light.

No plate = no citation that can be issued.

There are occasional plate crackdowns, mostly as towns get the new cams installed.

I just got a fix it ticket like 3 weeks ago driving my mom's camry which doesnt have front license plates drilled into the bumper. (the car is half a year old) Got caught at LAX...where within the same minute, they pulled over 2 other cars for the same thing. apparently they're checking at LAX as a safety concern. i live in irvine and i see tons of cars without front licnese plates, esp sports cars and luxo ones

I've been stopped 3 times by the police. None of the officers noticed the missing plate.

talk about no front license plate, i ate a ticket while my car was parked in Downtown LA near Westin hotel, $25 but it's correctible, if i slap it on, the fine will drop down to $10. But was never pulled over for not having a front plate. Still considering if i should put back the plate, the front is just gorgeous without the plate blocking the large air inlet.

Encinitas just got red light cams. I bet the San Diego County Sheriff steps up plate enforcement soon. Specifically at El Camino Real and Encinitas Blvd.

When I bought my Pontiac in 2000, they snuck in $10 to give me a cover for the front indentation where the plate would go.

I had to drill my own holes and attach the plate.

Cars do look much better without the front plate but I really don't want attention from the cops so I caved in and complied.

It just gives cops another reason to pull you over; it's not like they can't pull a dozen reasons out of their ass anyways.

i drive w/o the front plates in cali.

i hear its required in cali due to the photo tickets and radar guns. the license plate is a flat metal surface which reflect the radar waves directly back to the radar gun. but i'm willing to take my chances for $10.

i was planning to take off the front plate and zip tie it somewhere directly under where it usually will be. my friend does this on his 00 accord and the plate is still there but its subtle enough to not be noticed like it would at its original position. now all i need is something to plug those stupid holes.

Nope...the mounting screws go into two wholes out of sight of the bumper. If you remove the bracket, no wholes

I wonder if the fine is much higher in Ontario or if people aren't as anal about the frontal appearance of cars, but I notice that almost everyone here has a front plate and doesn't give it much thought (probably because it looks so normal).

Most people in California do too, but I don't like them. It usually isn't a problem and I've driven around for over a year with the plate off and nobody really notices. Not even the cops. I got pulled over once (was doing around 80 in a 45 zone). The cop let me off with a warning and didn't even notice the front plate was missing.
